SAT II scores - what's the lowest respectable score

There is only one school to which my son is considering applying that requires SAT II subject tests. He took the US History test earlier this month and will take Math in June. If his scores are really bad, I assume they will severaly damage his chances at admission (his other stats are in the lower half of what they accept.) I know what a good score is, but for highly selective schools that require SAT IIs, what is considered acceptably average?

There really isn’t one; I can tell you my opinion though, which is 700+ except for Math II, which is 750+ IMO.

700+, Imo…

750.. why are you putting +'s for the lowest score..

If a school uses SAT II to allow students to fulfill some requirement or place out of introductory classes, then consider taking the SAT II in May of your Sr. year. That way you can get the benefit of the test score without it reflecting on your application. 600 may be enough to meet foreign language requirements at some schools, although probably not the highly selective schools.

Well honestly for selective schools 700+ is where you should be at.

750 is not necessary, but it’s nice.

well, i’m not sure what “selective school” you’re talking about, but i got into Haverford College with a pretty bad SAT II score.

I got a 590 on the math I sat ii…and a 700 on the math section of the SAT.
and then a 610 on the french sat ii. (this one isn’t as bad, actually it gets me out of the language requirement)

I am a white, affluent, jew, from a fairly competitive area, so there wasn’t any type of affirmative action going on either.

The answer to this question depends on what schools you plan to apply to.

Rice. 750, right?

id say 750 is a good score, not lowest respectable.

I got into Rice with a 660 on one of my subject tests (Chemistry).

650 is probably the lowest respectable score (as in, won’t hurt you either way-check the box)

In my opinion, a 600 is the lowest respectable score.

Ballpark: 700 is competitive, 750+ is better.

I say 760 is “great.” 700+ is okay.

Depends on the subject test. I’d say shoot for 700+, but high 600s can be good too.

What I’ve gathered is that below 600 is the “don’t even bother to put it down” level. True?

^^^100% true. If you can help it, don’t submit subject test scores that are below 600 (unless the rest of your scores are 750+). However, if you submit your SAT’s, all of your SAT reasoning and subject scores are shown no matter what. If you submit ACT’s, you can choose whether to submit your SAT subject tests or not.

competitive engineering programs practically require a 750+ on Math 2.

650+ is respectable. 700+ is very good. 750+ is ideal.
