SAT II scores/which ones to take??

I am a sophomore and I want to apply to Ivy League schools.

I took the SAT II Bio M as a freshman and got a 740. If I'm not applying to medicine, is that a good score? If I take IB Biology I would retake it, otherwise that would be my score.

This year I'm in Honors Chemistry, and will take the SAT II Chem.

I'm also in Algebra II (8th grade: Algebra I, 9th grade: Geometry). Should I take the Math I this year, take the Math II this year, or take the Math II next year (after IB Math SL). I'm in the Accelerated Math program at a small, semi-competitive, public high school and have As in Algebra I, A+ in Geometry/Algebra II next year.

Does it hurt to keep on taking SAT IIs, even if its more than required? Could I jsut choose score choice and send in the best scores, even if I take 4-5?

i think the bio one is fine. and you should wait until after precal to take the math II. chemistry should be taken upon the completion of a college level chemistry course, so wait for taht too.

I’ll probably be taking:

Junior Year
IB English SL
IB History SL
IB Physics HL
IB Math SL
IB Spanish SL
maybe IB Biology HL?

Senior Year:
IB English HL
IB History HL
IB Spanish HL
IB Chemistry BL
AP Calculus

I’m not sure exactly what you learn in your IB math class, but given that you’re taking Calc senior year, I’m assuming junior year is something like precalc/trig? If so, wait until Junior year to take Math II. Don’t bother with Math I.
For Ivy Leagues, you might want to retake Bio - 740 isn’t that bad, but if you can get that Freshman year, I’m sure you can do better on a retake. And with Ivies, it’s always a good idea to do as well as you possibly can on stuff you can control, just in case.
The Chem SATII is not that bad, I think you can do it with honors chem; take a practice test first just to make sure.
A lot of colleges recommend that you send all your scores, and it might look a little obsessive if you’ve got like 5 SATIIs. I do, but I’m totally regretting taking that many.

Good luck :)

yeah, your bio score is kind of low for ivy. I’d suggest retaking it.

And for chem, are you going to take a higher level chem class than Honors Chem I? Like AP Chem or an equivalent? (I’d definitely recommend doing so). If so, then wait to take your chem SAT until then. I’m not sure how your school works, but I know that in my school, honors chem did not teach me enough for the SAT. Like, the SAT asked stuff about LeChatlier’s principle and K values and stuff that I definitely did not learn until AP Chem.

And regarding math, if you’re a strong math student, there’s no point in taking Math I and Math II. Just take Math II. And I’d wait until senior or junior year to take it. You don’t get any bonus points for taking it too early. I took Pre-Calc my junior year and then took my SAT math II that following June. Sure, I could have taken it earlier, but why? I took it the end of my junior year, didn’t study a bit, got an easy 800. And if you’re good at math, I suggest you do the same.

Hope this helped! :)

740 is fine. don’t waste time and money, instead do well on math 2 (don’t take math 1; it’s harder to get 800 on that than on math 2) and take 3rd test if you want to apply to schools 3.

@CanaryK: I’m probably going to take IB Chemistry, which is like AP Chemistry, senior year. Since that’ll be too late to take the SAT II, should I just take it at the end of this year?

thanks mermaid123456!

Most colleges including Ivies looks at no more than 3 SAT II subject tests. I think its best to just take Math II because what is the point in getting a score in math I and II. just focus on math II and try to get the highest score.
Also, I dont think you should retake it. Just focus on getting a higher score on the chem exam. And you can take it this year if you want. But if you are going to take the class next year, look the deadline for the school you are applying (Ed or regular) then you can take the SAT accordingly. You can apply then send in your SAT scores after you apply. So you can apply like the end of october for example and take the SAT I or II in november. It will still count. So take the test when you think you will do best on it.

Why do you have to take the chemistry SAT II? Are you sure you wouldn’t be better off taking it in another subject?

Also, it really depends on how good your honors chem class is… as I said before, take a practice test! And don’t forget, you can easily self study for these tests; I self-studied for the Biology M one and got a 790. So even if you do poorly on the practice test, if you really want to take the chem SAT II, just get a review book and learn the things that you didn’t learn in class.

@CanaryK - I was going to take SAT Chemistry because if I did well that would be one test out of the way for Junior Year, and it’s really the only one I can take this year. My chemistry teacher expects most of us to take the SAT II, and the last couple days the lessons have been on SAT topics, which are not necessarily on the state exam.

I’m not really taking a World History class this year, but I could take the SAT II for that potentially next year. And maybe Physics/Math II if I’m good at it.

I’m in a similar situation. I’m a sophomore who took/is taking the same sciences and ap calc. Your bio score is good enough; I wouldn’t spend more time on it, and my cousin actually got into Yale with that bio score.
Definitely take math II and not math I. The curve on math I is much harder, and seeing that you are an intelligent math student, it is definitely better for you to take the math II, which has an easy curve. If you take it now though, you’d have to learn a lot of material by yourself; I would wait a year.
You should keep with you plan on taking the chem subject test at the end of the year, which is what I am doing as well.
It also doesn’t hurt to take 4-5 subject tests. Then you have a wider pool to draw from and can submit your best 2-3 scores to colleges.
