SAT II: U.S. History Discussion May 2009

It was polio! [Polio vaccine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Polio vaccine - Wikipedia)

My teacher talked about how it was invented in the 50s because he was given the vaccine.

The quote about staying out of foriegn affairs was Washington’s farewell address right?

yes im 100% sure about teh ICC/sherman antitrust

I believe ICC was ineffective in the beginning ( that overrules 1 answer).

Sherman antitrust was successful (how can it not?) it broke up rockefeller’s trust. Also, the supreme court can’t overrule the sherman antitrust (at least i don’t think)

ICC looked for rebates and bad things w/ big companies = regulatory. The Sherman Antitrust broke up the trusts in 1890 = prohibitory.

Other questions missed:
Quote from Washington’s Farewell Address - ‘We have commercial alliances, but let’s not get political alliances’ - I messed this up because I thought it was a later president referring to Washington’s address :[

Graph of Immigrant Voters in 1928 - Showed that Roosevelt’s first election drove immigrants to vote Democratic (It’s not the Lithuania one, because it’s only a slice of Chicago, meaning that you only know what the candidates did to impact the voting group, not what the voting group did overall, in say, NY).

What was a reason for the US’s declaration of war in WWI? - I put C, to declare war before Mexico did, because A didn’t make sense when I read it. It still doesn’t make sense now, because A basically said “unreserved support of the British neutrality policy”? Or “unreserved support of the British on the neutrality policy.” Either way, Britain was not neutral then, London was angry at the US for remaining neutral, and the US was definitely being reserved (didn’t fight with Britain, kept on hiding things like the Lusitania).

-1 for me :frowning: poliooooo

and DaRican i also put washington for that one, staying away from political ties with europe is “fundamental”.

i didn’t think measles was a choice?
i thought the time period was sometime in the 1800s? i hope i didn’t get that one wrong!

dgor91
-differences was joint stock
-whitman i put romanticist but im not positive
-fdr: industrialists, all the new deal programs supported farmers
-colonial powers: i put little power and got power from governor…not sure though…
-local affairs: i think it was town meetings except i vaguely remember putting officials for some reason! :o
-what is this quote?
-after depression- this was an except question right? i think it was either the production one or inflation
-yeah no immigration

  • yup regulatory and prohibitory
-lost generation-i thought it was the chesapeake one…like roanoke island. for some reason i thought the wording of the literary one was something strange…
-reason for 2nd new deal: the one with the depression continuing and critics (huey long!)

-difference between Mass/VA and Spanish colonies:** joint stock?** or military leaders stronger in spanish colonies?

-people who didn’t support FDR: industrialists or southern land owners?
-colonial assemblies: had and gradually lost power? or had little power and than gained power by controlling monies of the governor?
-local affairs dealth with by: town meetings or officials appointed by the governor?
-quote about supreme court overruling president: truman?** Nope, almost sure it was eisenhower. he was talking about enforcing little rock (Desergraagtion).**
-what didnt happen at in the first three yrs of the great depression: a decrease in production?
-1880s and 1890s party agreement: no immigration from china? i think, not sure
-ICC and sherman antitrust: first one is regulatory, second is prohibitory? yeah thats what i said
-lost generation: literary or pot smokers in the 60s?
-reason for the second new deal: deepening recession still present? **no i think it was the critics or to expand it, something of the sort. **

Bold is what i put. Also, who was the first to start exploration in the new world. (I said Spain)
And which Indian group did the British work with ( I said iroqouis)
And so it wasn’t smallpox?

Answer is C.

[WikiAnswers - How and why did the US get involved in World War 1](http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_and_why_did_the_US_get_involved_in_World_War_1) :

yes it was eisenhower using exec to overrule wallace

I put E for the reason the US entered WWI but I forget the answer

what about the question like

“the articles of confederation was most effective in managing…”

was the last quote populists?

the first polio vaccine was in the 5o’s–that was the answer

Portugal was technically “first,” but they really didn’t do much. Spain kicked their ass and really did work. I put Spain. :x

radiosix, i think i put trade or something for that one

radiosix08, it was northwest ordinance (which in the question was phrased as creating territories/states).
I don’t agree with the WW1 answer Monoclide, but I don’t remember my answer choice either =P

What did you guys say for what was the first British/European (not sure which one) colony: It was either Jamestown or Mass. Bay if the question read British.

Articles of Confederation were effective in managing land (the ordinances)
I put spain for the exploration of the new world. (remember treaty of tordesillas?)
Last quote was populists although I’m not sure because they were hostile to blacks.

i put populists for the last one…
i had like 30 questions that i had skipped here and there when the administrator called 10 minutes -_-

What was that passage about women? The very last passage, near the end of the test.

Was it politics or education? Or the moral crap? (I put Moral. The others didn’t really as good with the passage.)

i think i also put e for ww1 answer but i don’t remember the answer either!
stupid vaccine one. i totally skimmed right over that!

redcatharsis- are you sure it was roosevelt? i don’t remember the other choices but i feel like i put something else… :/

i think the women thing was moral-it was the most directly implied.

portugal was definitely the first to explore but wasn’t spain just first to settle? i don’t remember what the question asked…

wait…the first European colony? I thought it was St. Augustine, so I put Florida…

St. Augustine is the county seat of St. Johns County [1], Florida, in the United States. It is the oldest continuously occupied European and African-established city, and the oldest port, in the continental United States.[2] St. Augustine lies in a region of Florida
