Help please! I’m torn between taking World history and U.S history. I don’t know which subject would be more beneficial. I’m good at both subjects and they would both take the same time and effort to study or prepare for and I get all 100’s on my school tests on both subjects. However, I only want to study for one of them and only take one of them for the SAT. I want to double major in economics and philosophy and I’m applying to unis in Canada such as UBC, McGill and UofT but which of these 2 history subjects would be best fitting and practical? Also, which one of the 2 is easier?
I would assume that World is better, given that you’re going to University in Canada, and that U.S. would be easier (it’s much more confined, after all).
Take the one you will find more interesting and / or that you have better prep for and/or have a better teacher for.
Anecdotally the English unis that I know see US History as the more demanding course- they see World as too big a subject to be done meaningfully in a year, so they assume that it must be somewhat cursory. Test wise, most of the kids that I know who have taken history APs rate Euro as hardest, followed by USHx, and then World.
In real life, it is not going to be the difference in whether or not you get an offer. Go for the one you feel better about- the more you like the subject the easier it is to do the work required.
