hello,
i'm a high school junior from SoCal. for SAT II, i have a 740 on Bio M and 800 on Math II C.

I never intend to become a bio major; I just took the Bio M test right after Bio H in freshman year, when everything's fresh.

I think I can score a high 700 if I take SAT 2 chem, which would be better than a 740 on Bio M. But I just want to get a opinion of whether it's worth another $30 to take, which is not a small amount. I don't want to do it unless it will make a visible difference in my college apps next year.

I think I got a 5 on ap chem, which can prove that i'm decent in chemistry. but I'm worried 'cause college don't seem to consider APs much during admissions. So, do I need to prove my chem knowledge again with SAT II? or can I move on?

I only say this as my friend was denied acceptance into MIT with fantastic scores and GPA and while he works there now as an engineer, everything possible to boost your chances would be worth it if that is the school you dream of going…

I don’t think you should consider the cost of the exam. If you think you can do well, you should probably try it out. The school you’re trying to get into is a lot more expensive than the subject test that might help you get there.

Just FYI, if you want to be an engineering major, some schools (i.e. Cooper Union) like to see either a Chem or a Physics SAT II, so you might want to take it.

Not really – the admissions office considers an applicant’s highest math score and highest science score, and additional scores aren’t really a factor.

I was just thinking whether I could avoid another SAT since I’m pretty sure I could pull 5s on both ap chem and ap physics. Do colleges even consider your ap scores during admission O_O?

I guess 740 is not a bad score. It’s just that I was reading the decisions thread and everybody seems to have a higher score than I do. Also, does it matter which subject I take? I’m not that into bio and would probably major in math/eecs if possible, but that’s more physics/chem territory.

I was admitted with these scores:
760 sat-i math
740 sat-ii bio-e

I also took the SAT-ii math 2 twice, but i’m not sure if MIT saw the second score because I took it in January. The first score was a 720, the second score was an 800.

AP scores are more standardized than grades in school, so they provide a good means of comparison to figure out how much your school inflates or deflates grades. APs can also demonstrate initiative, independence, etc. if you self-study any.
