Hello, I have been homeschool my whole life and am currently wondering which of these tests I should take (or take both). I am currently a sophomore and and trying to prepare for the standardized tests. The question is: what looks better on a college application: SAT IIs or AP exams? I feel as though I could do better taking the SAT IIs due to not taking any AP classes so far. What would you guys recommend? Does it look bad if I don’t take any APs? I will be doing dual enrollment at my local community college and am hoping that will make up for me not taking any APs. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!
You need to spend time reading college websites. They will specify if they require subject tests. (None require APs.) Some schools do not require subject tests in general but do require them from homeschoolers.
Without knowing what you are taking or anything about your level of achievements, no one can give you a definitive answer. For example, we are not homeschoolers who pursue a lot of APs. That comment is factual, but it is equally meaningless. I have had a child graduate from high school with multiple 300 level math and science courses, but only 2 APs. My current graduating sr took no APs and only 1 DE course this semester. Equally, that information only matters in terms of institutionalized educational definitions. Even though she didn’t take APs or really DE, she has very high levels of academic achievement and numerous regional and international awards. Colleges are aware that homeschoolers may take less traditional paths.
IOW, it isn’t a simple yes/no/this/that answer. It really boils down to who you are, what you are doing, and your academic accomplishments.
As mentioned above, APs are not college admissions tests. They show rigor and may count for college credit, but they are never required to apply.
The Compass Guide is a great reference for testing requirements and strategies. The most popular colleges are listed, but always double check on the college websites since things change.
