I know this is a pretty quiet board, but since there is at least one parent of a Grinnellian present, I figured I'd ask my question anyway.

I really like everything that I've read about Grinnell, and they're my first choice currently. However, unlike most (it seems) of the kids on this board, I have not been an overachiever. I am homeschooled, and instead of taking lots of standardized tests, I've just studied hard through high school. I've gotten almost straight A's (two B's in all of high school), and got pretty good scores on my SAT I's (math: 660; Crit. Reading: 770; Crit. Writing: 740- 790 multiple choice, 8 on the essay). I also have some extracurricular activities (various awards in Girl Scouts, held troop government positions, volunteering with local astronomy association, etc.). Do you think that I have any chance of getting accepted into Grinnell without taking the SAT II's? Do I have to take all three of the "recommended" tests, or can I compromise with them? Would I have a better chance if I applied without (or with only one) if I apply early decision? I'm going to talk to the admissions counsellor tomorrow, but I wanted to see what those with some real experience say.

um I think that as a homeschooled student you should take as many standardized tests as possible to prove how much you've learned, no? also, interviews are important. set up an alumni interview. Not sure if ED helps in acceptance although it shows interest. ED is a personal choice really and if you need aid I don't recommend it.

I imagine the admissions office would be happy to answer this question for you -- but I agree with GIME -- as you are homeschooled, it's hard for the college to compare your GPA to other students. I would take the SAT IIs. What you might do is to send in your SAT I scores now and if, for some reason, you don't do as well as you would like on your SAT IIs, you don't have to send those.

Thank you everyone for giving me your advice. I talked with one of the counselors, and am trying to compromise. I'm taking the SAT II in bio (likely my future major), and may apply ED. So, we'll see how it turns out. Thanks again- I really appreciate it.

The Fiske Guide says SAT IIs are optional for Grinnell, but your SAT Is were so good, I'd expect you'd do really well on SAT IIs also. I like the advice to send SAT I scores, take SAT IIs and decide what to do with them after you see the scores.
