My dad keeps telling me that if I take the AP test, i wouldn't have to take the SAT II's for the same thing. A lot of my friends take both anyway. Say that I got a 5 on my AP, would you say it's unecessary to take the SAT IIs for the same sub?

You don't HAVE to take any one particular SAT II test for any school that I know of (except that if you take a Math SAT II, UC's require it to be Math II). But you do have to take at least two SAT II's for the vast majority of colleges, no matter what or how many AP classes you took.

For placement, your dad is correct, but not for admissions.

for admissions, SAT II's are way more important

well, i meant something a bit different. I do mean to take 3-4 sat IIs, but in my situation i was wondering if i should take french, lit, physics, and u.s. or just take out u.s. if i'm confident for a 5 on the APs and either just take 3 sat IIs or replace u.s. w/ something else

If you're confident of a good scores, then take as many as you want. I warn you though: only the science subject tests are like their AP counterparts. APUSH tests your analysis of US history but the SAT for US History tests how much you've crammed and memorized.
