SAT Improvement Forum

Hi, I am currently studying for my SATs and I believe I can nail down the math and writing sections with 800s in each. Math is really straightforward for me, and writing just took some practice. I am still struggling with the critical reading however. I am usually getting anywhere from 580-620 on critical reading sections in blue book. What is the best way to improve that score to a 700-800 as soon as possible?

If practice is the best way to get things done, which book/books other than blue book should I get to practice for every section, but critical reading mostly?

Also, what is the best book to learn the main vocab words, and what is the best way to retain all those words?

Thank you.

A lot of people on these boards tend to recommend Direct Hits and Essential 500 Words by Larry Krieger. I bought and really like the Essential 500 book but I can’t say how much I would have improved with it since I don’t plan on retaking the SAT. If vocab is your main problem those books would be a good start.

For the reading comprehension, practicing is really the only way to go. Find whatever works for you. My preferred approach to the passage-based questions is to, right before I begin reading, quickly underline the numbered lines that some of the questions refer to.

Allrite, sounds good. Thanks for the advice. I will take that into account.
