SAT Math 2 - How to increase my score?

I just took my first practice test from the Princeton Review book - with minimal prep - and received a 690 on the math 2 test. How can I raise my score to a 750+ by the November 2nd test date?

Also, are there common difficult problems for a test like this or is it a lot more random than the math 1? And just by skimming through the prep book it seems there are a bunch of strange formulas that I've never seen before. Are they all that relevant? And are any provided to you when you take the test?

Sorry for all the questions. I've just never taken an SAT/SAT Subject Test before, so I'm a little worried.

Thanks for the help!

(And if it's important, I got 32/50 correct. I got 6/50 wrong and I omitted 12.)

Speed is definitely a factor. Omitting 12 problems won’t net you a very high score.

What math classes have you taken? Most formulas shouldn’t appear too strange if you have taken pre-calculus, although math II has a few other discrete topics.

Agreed. If you have taken an Honors Pre-Calculus class, most of the Math II should be familiar to you. I took math two twice, and the second time I did 50 points better with minimal studying in between. Sometimes just having the experience of taking it once will help you tremendously for the next time you take it (But you might not have time - are you applying to college this year?). By the way, if you can get a 690, that is not so bad!

You should try to take more practice tests to increase your speed and accuracy and go over the concepts that you didn’t understand even after reading the book from an online source, such as khan academy. The math II usually allows a raw score of 43-44 to have an 800, so it shouldn’t be that hard to get that score.

Yeah, I guess I was exaggerating a bit. I’m in AP Calculus AB right now, and I DO recognize all the formulas, but they just don’t seem like things I’m commonly used to. I guess I’m comparing it too much to the ACT math (which I received a 34 on), which is far too simple.

I took Honors Pre-Calc, so I recognized the vector questions, even v odd function questions, etc., but I have to brush up on them again. I completely blanked out on them, so I had to omit them.

@Latin4Life: And I don’t have much time - as I’m applying to college this year.

If I can get up to ~40/50 on the test, I’ll be satisfied, because my goal is a 750, and I believe 40/50 as a raw score nets me a 770, which is plenty for me.

If you want to increase score in short order. I’d recommend trying ******* Prep. Founder was head of test prep at Kaplan and created a much better system. Why does the system star that out. K N E W T O N!
