I'm starting the IB next year. I plan to take HL Math, but my tutor told me that it's twice as hard as the math I'm studying now (Algebra II). I'm currently in the 10th grade, and I took the SAT on Saturday. The math part looked okay, but I didn't know a lot of it.

So is IB HL Math about the same as SAT Math?

Hi, I’m also a 10th grader starting IB next year. I plan on taking HL too, and I’ve been getting previews of the curriculum through my current math teacher. It is definitely harder. Much harder. On the SAT, a big part of the process is actually taking the test. In IB, you are supposed to answer more real life type questions that are actually a process. For example, the SAT will tell you to just solve for something, but IB will tell you to solve for something, then using that answer, find something else, and then using a specific process you’ve learned in class, find another piece of information. I don’t know about HL compared to Algebra 2, because in Georgia we use “integrated math”, but I do know that the class is very quickly paced and you will need a lot of prerequisite trig skills (identities, trig equations, vectors in 3d, etc.). Hope it helps!

Oh well, I kind of suspected that IB HL would be way harder. I’m not very good at math to begin with, but I guess I’ll just have to suck it up and study really, really hard.

alg. 2 < SAT I Math < pre-calc/ trig < SAT subject math 2C < AP calc < HL Math (assuming you mean Further Math SL, and not just HL2 math / AP stats)

hahaa how can you even put SAT math and HL math in the same sentence? If you’re struggling with Algebra 2, then maybe you should consider SL’ing. Another thing you should know, though, is that the math in the SAT I and Hl is completely different. Just because a person understands most higher level math concepts doesn’t guarantee he or she will excel in the math tested in the SAT, as it’s more about critical thinking than applying learned concepts, and the other way around, so don’t let a low SAT math score discourage you.

I take SL Maths in the IB program, which is a lot harder than SAT Maths, so taking HL Maths is always a bit dodgy if you’re not completely comfortable with the level you’re at now. Remember… you want to get 6’s and 7’s in HL subjects, not anything below that…

Im in Math HL right now. It fully depends on the option your school offers. The calculus option leads to a much easier HL course than a Discrete Mathematics option. Whether or not you did well on the SAT math will not effect your performance in HL math. Its harder than any math course I’ve taken (I’m studying engineering in college). HL math and SAT math shouldn’t even be in the same comparison. But, if u dont do well on your SAT math, DO NOT TAKE MATH HL you’re going to fry more than Snooki at a beach.

Realistically, there is just no way that I can pass HL Math. (I’m nearly failing Algebra II.) It looks like what I’ll have to do is just take SL Math instead and take 4 HL subjects to make up for it. takes a deep breath

I am in HL Maths and as far as high school maths courses are concerned, it is most likely the most advanced/difficult (further maths excepted, though it is a consists mostly of HL options). SL is pretty hard too though and in my school it is actually more difficult than HL because the teacher is very tough, which is pretty funny. So basically, you have made the right decision. However, you don’t have to “make up” for not taking HL Maths by taking 4 HLs, unless you are applying for a maths based career or something similar. 4 HLs is really tough man, take it from me, the combination of HL Maths, Biology, English, and History can be very daunting at times. Just make sure you’re sure you can handle the workload before you take it on. ;)

This thread is old, but just to let y’all know, I’m taking differential equations and HL Math and guess which class I have a lower grade in. HL Math… screw IB.
