My son is a full IB Diploma student. The SAT 2 tests seem much more geared towards AP curriculum. He is a strong Math student (A and A+) but does NOT want to be pre-med or study engineering. His teacher suggested he take the Math 1, because he could do very well and not throw himself in the ring with the future doctors and engineers. He took the Bio in 9th grade and got a 730. He was goign to take USHistory but the curriculum in IB is completely different than that test. He has a 2250 on the SAT and is looking to apply to small LAC in the North East and maybe try for Brown (like very other student from NY) Any IB math students or parents that can shed some light on this for us? thanks

I’m going to be a full IB diploma student next year and i’ve been informed that IB SL Maths (not studies) and IB HL maths are both sufficient prep (but you’ll need to review a few things from a book as the IB Maths syllabus doesn’t cover everything) for SAT Maths Level 2. However, SL Maths studies certainly isn’t. Which is he taking?

It’s actually easier to score higher in Math level 2 because of the curve so i think he should do level 2 if he is taking sl maths methods or hl maths.

He is in HL. He said he looked at sample questions from math 2 and he hadn’t learned any of it

@twoboys2 Seriously? That can’t be. Which maths class was he in prior to HL maths? Because level 2 requires nothing more than pre-calculus. I’m an international student who does the British curriculum (IGCSE) and the course i’m taking covers most of pre-calculus - the level 2 questions look hard but do-able to me.

He’ll probably cover everything later onwards, maybe wait till the summer and study then? He should be able to manage it then because i know for a fact that the HL syllabus surpasses the level of maths that would be needed to take the level 2 exam. I know several SL maths students who were able to take the exam in the fall of their senior year. That would probably be the most appropriate time for him to take it.

He says they have barely done pre-calc. My older son was in SL math and took AP Calculus and said they were nothing alike. We live in NY which still has Regents exams. The IB Physics curriculum is COMPLETELY different from regents. So after the kids take their IB exams in May they spend a month teaching them the regents curriculum. IB in NY state is very different than in the rest of the world where they dont have other mandated curriculum. Its kind of frustrating.

@twoboys2 The way they’re teaching the IB syllabus at your son’s school is definitely odd! If he hasn’t done much of pre-calculus yet i definitely think it’d be best to listen to his teacher’s advice and to do Math level 1. Or he could just avoid maths SAT II altogether if he doesn’t intend in majoring in engineering/science/business. He obviously does IB English therefore i think the SAT II Lit is a viable option - if it’s his forte that is.
