I am American student, who has been recently looking at a Scottish university, the University of Edinburgh.
For them, I should have two SAT subject tests above 700, and I’m doing the Math II and Physics because that would work best with Engineering, which is what I’m applying for.
However, I’ve never taken a Physics course and I got a 680 on normal SAT Math.
Should I be concerned, and how does the scoring work for both tests?
With enough studying over this summer, could I get a 700+ or even a 750+?
I wouldn’t apply to a British school in engineering if you haven’t had physics. They go very much by how strong you are on subject tests related to whatever you want to study. Their system in biased towards those who went to good high schools. They don’t look much at potential.
Which science classes have you taken? If you’ve taken chemistry, it might be a better subject test to take rather than physics. Also, have you taken pre-calc? The Math II is intended for people who have just finished pre-calc.
I finished pre-calc honors with an A, so that makes me feel good. I’ve also taken the College-Level Math Test by Accuplacer that qualifies me for college calc and physics, so I guess that those are both great signs. I’ve taken bio and chem for my sciences, but I was okay in them, so I don’t know if I should do those over physics, where I have some interest and could learn much faster because of that. Also, I was in a STEM program a few years ago, so I do have a basic knowledge of physics from that program. Anyway, thanks for the questions. They’re something I haven’t thought of.
Lol, though with British schools, you can’t take introductory physics in university. Not sure about Scotland, but most English engineering applicants will have concentrated on math, physics, and something like chemistry or computingfor their last 2 years. So you are unlikely to get in without strong math and physics preparation.
Physics is going to be very hard to pull off. Math will also be tough but probably less so than physics. For math, I’d recommend you take as many Barron’s practice tests as possible and also try online platforms at the same time (I used Diagknowstics, which worked for me). Good luck!
