SAT / National Merit

This is probably posted elsewhere but I don't see it. Does anyone know what SAT scores are required to make National Merit finalist?

It's fairly low, somewhere in the 1200's, I think. They just want a cross-check that the PSAT score wasn't a fluke. Remember, 15/16 of all Semifinalists become Finalists and there are other reasons that the 1/16 don't, e.g., grades, recs, failure to turn in essay.

Thanks. Not sure what 1200's means though. Is that adding Critical Reading? I was concerned because his Math score puts him 96th percentile which is .. well, not 98th.

Thats 1200 on the 1600 scale.. Roughly 1800 out of 2400? Like TheDad said, most people who turn in the application, their SAT scores, and an essay that shows some control of the English language become finalists.

I think any score in the 90th percentile is going to be fine.

Good catch, Tanman...I'm still in Old SAT mode.

lol.. same here. I still get a bit confused when people talk about their 2200 on their SAT - so used to reading scores out of 1600 or out of 4000 (old SAT + 3 SAT II's)

Thanks! Son's guidance counselor told me, "He's second in the school (on PSAT)... " like maybe they could just have one. I feel better.
