SAT or SAT Subject Tests? A Catch 22

Hello. I am a rising senior and I have recently received my SAT scores: 600 reading, 680 math, and 650 writing (total 1930). I Want to apply to Boston College, which requires two SAT subject test scores of my choice. I think I could do very well in Physics and Math II. Also, I really feel that my SAT score is not up to par, and I feel that I could do better in reading. The problem is that the next test date is in early October, and the next would be early November. See, if I took both the SAT and the SAT Subject Tests, I would be cutting it ridiculously close to my application deadlines for colleges. So, which is more important? The SAT or the Subject tests? Or should I just take both? Thanks to anyone who has advice.

If Boston College requires SAT II and you don’t have them, then isn’t the answer obvious?

If Boston College requires SAT II and you don’t have them, then isn’t the answer obvious?

Well yes I suppose. But here, for example, NYU and UNC Chapel Hill do not require the Subject Tests, but they do take them into consideration. Disregarding Boston College, would it be better to take the SAT or the Subject tests?

It depends on whether or not you have a reason to believe you will do better in reading.

Did you try ACT? Before you make a decision, get couple of official ACT tests and do a timed practice test. If you score high enough, then register for September ACT test and October SAT II test.

By the way, you can’t take both Subject and regular SAT tests on the same day.

Definitely take the ACT as @lerkin suggested. This way you’ll have 2x the testing dates (4) to improve your scores.

If schools require/recommend SAT subject tests and you don’t have them, then take them.

Your SAT will be more important in the long run. You’re gonna have cut it close as I’m pretty sure Boston College’s average SAT score is higher than 1900/2400, so there’s a chance you won’t even get in without improving that. SAT Subject Tests aren’t as highly considered in the application process.

Boston College is one of my top choices as well and I am in a very similar predicament as you are. Currently, I have a 2030 SAT score with a decent amount of prep. I’d love to take one last SAT and absolutely kill it. By the way, BC’s 25th - 75th percentile SAT scores are 1890 - 2170. Similarly, though, I’ll need to take subject tests in November. Please let me know how you’re handling this because frankly, I’m stumped.
