I really want to reach a 2000 before the end of this year and I probably only have this last month of summer to prep well for SAT, since I’m going to be entering my junior year in highschool in August. Here is my SAT score from May:
CR: 570 (I thought I did well…guess not)*
Math: 670
WR: 650 Essay: 10
Total: 1890
*I have tried other methods to get through CR sections but I’m a stubborn person sticking with my own method of reading the passage first before answering the questions. Time was not an issue with this SAT attempt.
Lately, I’ve been practicing from Barron’s SAT book and after taking test 4 and test 5 in the back of the book, my score range dropped to the low 1800s. I have heard that Barron’s SAT problems are different from the real SAT and much harder(that I can agree with), but looking at the score drop has just made me feel even more depressed. Most of the time it’s Barron’s WR problems that are killing me. What should I do to increase my score higher by maybe a max of 100 points? It already feels like this is my limit. Any tips and guidance would be appreciated!
Practice from the official blue book. Barron’s tests, while good practice for more difficult topics and question types, are not very representative of the actual. Practice practice practice tests. The Princeton Review PSAT study book has a great, concise vocab list with easy-to-remember definitions. Many of the words in that book appeared on my actual SAT last October.
my advice is: spend more time reviewing and practicing the math and writing section, since you are more likely to get higher grades on these two sections next time. I have spent most of my time practicing the reading section, and little time on math & writing since I knew I would do well, nevertheless I still got only a 540 on reading, and 680 on math and 770 on writing.
good luck I am thinking about maybe retaking the sat in October … even though not very likely… maybe will take the literature subject test instead.
How many sentence completions do you miss? If the number is >0, then you haven’t reached your limit–you can memorize words.
Thanks I appreciate the advice! ^^
I have actually never used the Blue Book and have instead used other sources like Princeton Review and Kaplan occasionally. However each source did have its drawbacks, for instance Kaplan was way too easy in the math for me and it’s CR was confusing, Princeton Review was so-so, and Barron’s math and writing were tricky. However, I used Barron’s PSAT before when I prepped for the PSAT and found a significant score increase…just not this time for SAT.
To answer marvin100, I only missed one sentence completion in CR.
*Sigh…even so, I guess I’ll go hit the books and review vocab. (>.<) I’ll do my best.
