Hey y'all! I have one question to ask all my fellow CCers. :)

I took the December SAT:
CR: 760
W: 800
M: 740 (....)
Total: 2300

Even though it seems kind of strange to retake the SAT after receiving a good score, I know that I can probably improve my math score to 800. Would it be worth it to retake the SAT for those extra 60 points (assuming my other section scores remain relatively the same), or would it be a waste of time?

I'm planning to apply to some pretty competitive colleges, and with only a few main ECs, I'm wondering if a higher SAT score would help to further solidify my application.

Thanks! ^_^

People normally say there is no need to take the SAT again once you score above 2250. Unless you are going to apply to specialized programs in which scores actually become an important factor that determine your acceptance, I do not see any reason to take the test again. Congratulation on your results.

Agree with the top poster. Don’t retake after you pass a certain threshold.

How many times have you taken the SAT?
How much prep did you need to do in order to score that 2300?

That score places you in the pool of students considered by top-tier colleges to be “good enough to admit”…with respect to standardized test scores. Congratulations.

Other elements of your application will almost certainly determine the admissions decision at those top-tier colleges. That being said, it costs $50 to take the test again, you could take advantage of the super-score, and you probably wouldn’t have to work too hard to prepare for the test. The Math section is notorious for having a harsh scaled score curve. It’s not unreasonable to have to take the test at least a couple of times to have the best shot at an 800 on Math. There’s also the possibility that your CR score may improve.

As my D replied when asked if she would retake the SAT: “why would I want to ruin a Saturday morning when I have a perfectly good score?”

Congratulations! I’m striving to achieve a score like that, but you should just relax and be happy that your hard work paid off. It’s one less thing to worry about now :)

@bartleby007 To put things succinctly, I didn’t study as much as I should have. I mostly took practice tests from any prep books I could find. This was my first time taking the SAT- which is why I’m a little split over whether to retake or not!

Are you a junior or a senior?

I would say no unless you really want to attend somewhere where the math score is generally considered more important like MIT or CIT. Beside those two schools, your SAT is perfectly fine. For those two schools, it’s okay. If you are a junior I would take it again over the summer or during the fall just because you would have more schooling, and it really only takes 4 hours. If you were to score a 2400 then your chances could improve (but don’t stress about it, you’ve already done very well).

@overachiever1 I am currently a junior. :)

And thank you to everyone who has replied! Your opinions have been extremely helpful :)
