SAT retake.....

So I got a 2320 on my SAT...unfortunately realized that my target college only looks at 1600 scale. This means that I only got a 1520 in the old format, which roughly translates into a 2200+. I feel somewhat worried and am now contemplating (rashly) a retake. Some advice would be helpful...thanks!

A 1520 / 2320 is not at all bad and colleges don’t really look at slight differences in scores. If you can financially afford losing another $50 and you are fine with throwing away a Saturday, then go ahead. Personally, I think it would be a lot better to focus that time on other, arguably more important things. Ultimately, it won’t be a 30 point difference on the SAT that makes or breaks your college application.

At 1500+/2250+, I don’t think there would be much difference in the admission office. What would be more important is your GPA, EC and essay.

Re retake. It depends on the 1520 breakout. If a balanced score like 760/760 or 750/770, then I would not suggest a retake. But if it is lopsided especially 800/720 and you believe you can improve the lower end of the score and do not mind retaking the SAT, then by all means do so.

Nevertheless, keep in mind, that high test scores by themselves are not a panacea. My younger son received a 1540 (770/770) plus very high SAT II scores and top 3% grades at a top 100 HS with 10 APs. Yet, his EC’s were decent but not spectacular and he never participated in science fairs and the like. His results were mixed, with admissions to WUSTL, UVA and WM (we live in VA), rejections at Georgetown and Brown, and wait list at Duke, Vandy, and Davidson.

If you can better use the time participating in research/science fairs (or similar activities in the liberal arts etc), I would recommend doing that over spending many hours rstudying for another SAT.

You are in pretty good shape.
