My SAT score is 1120 and a 3.2 GPA. Can I get into NJIT (or) Rutgers (North Brunswick/Newark) (or) TCNJ and looking for Computer Science Major. Please Advice and provide direction. I appreciate all your help.
NJIT may be possible. Are you a senior? Do you have any other schools on your list? ECs?
Yes, I am in Senior and in the process of applying for the colleges.
I am planning to put Early Action for NJIT/TCNJ/Rutgers(North Brunswick & Newark).
Rowan, Montclair, Rider are also on the list.
I think TCNJ would be a stretch. Rowan, Montclair, Rider and Rutgers-Newark are more likely.
Those test scores and GPA are low. Are there extenuating circumstances?
RU Newark might be possible. Also consider Rider, Kean, Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth. If financial aid is not an issue then look into Drew University.
@sravikumar What kind of grades in math and science courses? What math are you currently in and what’s your grade in it? You may be able to get into NJIT, but the first year courses are rough and a “B” is required in their CS 100 course to be a CS major. You can consider Rider, Kean etc. as suggested above, but while they may be a little easier overall, it will not be a cakewalk, considering your HS GPA.
Rutgers - New Brunswick and TCNJ would probably be a stretch based on the GPA. Rowan is very much within reach.
Not sure if TCNJ gives more weight to SAT compared to GPA.
All are ‘A’ and ‘B’ for Math and Science high school course.
Currently in Pre-Calculus.
TCNJ is quite a stretch but the others seem possible.
TCNJ is a fairly small college with very limited number of seats available for computer science major and therefor it would be too selective in admissions. Your chances are much better with Rutgers NB since it admits lot more students as it is a large university.
TCNJ and Rutgers-NB will be a reach. Rutgers-Newark may have some courses offered jointly with NJIT. You should check. But both will be tough if you have only had precalc senior year. Calculus is their weed out course for CS and engineering majors, and it’s rough if you have not had some calculus in high school.
With your stats and only taking precalc senior year, would aim for Montclair or Rowan. Also, if money is not an issue, consider FDU, Monmouth and Rider. As I said earlier, while they may be a little easier overall, it will not be a cakewalk. Make sure each of these colleges has a backup major that you would also be interested in.
