SAT score: Distressed, Depressed, and Demotivated

Hi, it seems I did worse this time on the June SAT.
On the January SAT my scores were:
670 Math
630 Reading
710 Writing
(10 essay)

Total: 2010

June:
630 Math
660 Reading
710 Writing
(10 essay)

Total: 2000

My goal is a 2200, which doesnt seem plausible anymore. I know I will spend 8+ hours studying over the summer to get a 200 points boost, but I feel really distressed that instead of improving, my score is decreasing. I spend months prepping for the June SAT by reviewing 20+ SAT review books and going to 2 separate tutoring places. However, I find that I spent a lot of time doing school work, as I attend a Humanities Magnet Program with a lot of AP classes. I have a 3.83 GPA (unweighted).

How can I improve my score? Is it even possible for such a boost?
I'm taking it again in October (of my Senior year...last chance)
I dont know what I'm doing wrong, since I did plenty of practice and studying... Please help!

Can anyone please help me?

Scores are not everything. I was you last year. My scores were not "amazing’ either but my college saw beyond that. dont think your number is the only thing that will get you in. if you write really great essays (and i mean REALLY great), you will have good chances at whatever college. just know that even great scorers get rejected from the best schools.

Thanks, but I’m going to study a lot over the summer. I just dont know if it’s possible to get 2200 anymore. I seem stuck on getting the poorer scores, even though I put in the effort to study.

you will have to study really hard!

and to be honest, it might not be possible. if anything, you will have to STUDY HARD for the math and writing, the easiest to improve.

YES, it is possible to boost your score pretty easily, at least in Critical Reading. Please bear with me.

“The Essential 500 Words” by Larry Krieger, gets you all the vocabulary words for the SAT. Take it from me, I studied 25 practice tests in addition to 2 large SAT books and around 1000 words too. Barron’s 500 usually score around 2-3 words on the SAT, and so does Princeton. But Essential scored EVERY SINGLE correct word on my SAT (around 20 or so). And his book scores over 15 (out of 17) words on most SAT’s, not only mine.

You may get a lot of suggestions, so let me just end off with one last fact: One week with this book raised my Critical Reading score 130 points from a 640 (May Sunday 2013) to a 770 (June Sunday 2013).

Like you, I was crushed in May when I heard that I got a 2080 when I thought I got a 2200. But with Essential (and some more studying), I scored a 2270 on the June SAT. I t may seem like a get rich quick scheme, and 2 months ago, I would have thought it was. But it worked. It’s ironic how similar our situations were; I just hope your outcome will be the same as mine :)

The average increase is only 40 points so you’re not that far away from the statistical norm. (Although most scores do go up). The posts that claim to have gained a couple hundred points are either lying or are nothing but a statistical fluke (I.E. Got lucky). All said, I understand the need to get a 2200. I would master the boiler plate essay format, then concentrate on Math. Whatever is leftover should go to CR since it’s the hardest to improve. All you can do is to put in the time and hope for a little luck to come your way. Here’s a start - GL.

Yeah, it’s just those couple of questions I miss on each section. To get a 2200, I think you’re only allowed to miss two on CR, Math, and Writing/Grammar. I miss 5-6 for both math and reading, which drops my score significantly. I miss 3 for the Grammar multiple choice, with a 10 essay, so my score is usually around the lower 700’s.
I need to miss less questions, which is really difficult… I’ve been taking practice tests and my score is in the 2200s because the scoring is off.
Now, I have to work towards getting 800’s on all practice tests. I need to miss 0 questions.

Try taking the September ACT. Some students test better for the ACT. In addition, even if the ACT doesn’t turn out better, you still have the option of taking the SAT in October.

Studying 8hrs/day is not going to work, though. You need to target what type of question you miss. Focus on the math first.

I think at this point, I need to study this much everyday in order to thoroughly improve. I have nothing else to do over the summer. I dont want my crappy SAT score to ruin my chances to college.

study vocab. DO IT. it worked for me, it’ll work for you. it’s not luck, it’s gaining enough knowledge about words to be able to guess correctly the meaning of words you don’t know on the actual test.

I dont have trouble with vocabulary. For some reason, my interpretation of the passage is incorrect based on the answers.
