SAT scores are much more important than GPA (I think)

I can't give you statistical proof, since no one really knows how the college officials weigh scores and grades, but I can give you my personal observations.

My school is filled with pseudo-intellectuals who are applying to prestigious colleges. On average, I'd say their SAT scores are well below the magic 2000. But at least their GPAs compensate for their insanely low scores, right? Well, at first glance, one might say "yes", but let's have a look at the college acceptances and rejections so far.

Valedictorian - 103 Average, 1760 SAT. Rejected from NYU and Georgetown. No acceptance from other top colleges so far. Accepted to city colleges and state universities only so far.

Salutatorian - 102 Average, 1850 SAT. Rejected from NYU, Georgetown, and Geneseo. No acceptance from other top colleges so far. Accepted to city colleges and state universities only so far.

Swim Team Member - 96 Average, 1950 SAT - Rejected from Geneseo, Georgetown and Boston College. No acceptance from other top colleges so far. Accepted to city colleges and lower state universities only so far.

Twin Sisters - Both 99-100 average, 2000-2050 SAT - Rejected from Cooper Union and Carnegie Mellon. No acceptance from other top colleges so far. Accepted to city colleges and state universities only so far.

================================================================

Guy A - 82 Average, 2140 SAT. Accepted to Geneseo and Boston College. Accepted to all State Universities. No rejections so far.
Guy B (Me) - 94 Average, 2180 SAT. Accepted to Wesleyan. Accepted to best state university in NY, Binghamton. Accepted to minor, not well-known universities. No rejections so far.

That's all I can think of for the 2nd team. Not many people score above 2100 in my school.
Anyone else getting similar results in their school?

Try saying that to Georgia Tech! And the reason A probably got into BC is that you had relatives who were alumni.

I thought Stony Brook > Binghamton or am I wrong?

Nope. A has no relatives in BC.
And I was wrong that Binghamton is the best SUNY. Turns out Geneseo was the best. But I don’t think Stony beats Bing.
I think we should all pull our heads out of our asses and admit that GPA is pretty much useless after you pass the 85, or sometimes even 80, mark.

Omg, how did the Swim Team member and Twin Sisters got denied to Geneseo, GT, BC, Cooper Union and CMU? They seem to have really high profiles.

geneseo>binghamton>stony brook

and while high sat scores are more impressive than high gpa, i wouldn’t go as far as to say it doesnt matter past 85. it does matter a good bit, and the rigor of your courses help too. there are other factors on everyones app that can be helping/hurting peoples chances causing a fake appearance of correlatioin. but afterall, if u were an admission counselor and two people had equal sats scores but one had a higher gpa who has the advantage?

@ HopefulEagle86

Yeah, I was surprised too when I heard the news. I kind of feel guilty though. I laughed so loud. I know it’s not ‘right’ to do so, but I couldn’t help it.

“Well-rounded”?
That guy in the swim team is well-rounded, isn’t he? Or could it be that his essay sucked?
But there is a girl in my school who got into georgetown with a 95 average and 1800 SAT. Thing is, she’s one of the best golf players in the state.

So the SAT is more important than GPA.

Still I’m trying to maintain a 90issh GPA, could’ve been MUCH higher if I had not slacked off lol.

Hopefully I can eventually score around a 2100-2300 on the SAT by May-June to compensate for my GPA.

Mind telling me what is suppose to be a good essay to the eyes of the adcoms at those prestigous schools then?

Something meaningful.
Something that isn’t bland, overused, and pointless?

“Valedictorian - 103 Average, 1760 SAT. Rejected from NYU and Georgetown. No acceptance from other top colleges so far. Accepted to city colleges and state universities only so far.”

Your school suffers from severe grade inflation lol.

@ shaheiruddin

Well, it is a public school after all.
But what is a guy with a 103 average ‘supposed to get’ on the SAT?

At least above a 2000+? I don’t know. The SAT beat me up and left me to die. Then I met the ACT :)

I would say at least above a 1950+

over 2400 b/c his average is over 100 =P

^
lol

10 char

I don’t know yet for my class but my is that strong SAT/ACT scores (at least above 2000 or 30) are a prerequisite to get adcoms to look at the rest of your application seriously at elite universities. I find it odd, though, that at your school the kids with amazing grades had such lackluster SAT scores.

irishevan99: Some people aren’t good standardized test takers so you cannot assume that such individuals can be compared to the picture of their school.

Is the “I’m not a good test taker” excuse still going around?

Well there are certain reasons why people aren’t superior at SATs. It isn’t just about your ability to take a test, but also your ability to understand materials logically.

What academy did you attend btw?
