About what SAT score would make an out of state applicant competitive for admissions/scholarships? Would I be ok with a 1440/2150?

with that I would say you are 50:50, just because that is probably the average out of state sat score. It really depends on your grades and extracurriculars/essays.
try and get closer to 1500 to maybe put a lock on acceptance, even that may not get you in.

does anyone know of average scores for out of state students?

I think he is right for last year they told our group from Atlanta that the out of state students scored averaged high 1400's. Most of the alumni at the meeting started coughing....choking and said they were no where close to that. There may be stats on that in the admissions section of the website.
I think you are close also....get great letters, write great essays, and make yourself stand out somehow. they hand read each application. good luck.

That is right on the money with my D's scores. She had great essays, EC's, many prestigious honors, and wonderful recs from faculty. She was waitlisted, came off the waitlist w/no money. She accepted her spot and let another really great school go.

My OOS D's scores are almost identical. She got "likely" notes, was admitted early, and got in the Honors program (no $$ however!). And, she's loved every bit of her first year there.

Every thing counts at UNC on admissions -- essays, recs, extracurrics -- all of it. So the scores are a factor, no doubt. But start early on the essays and short answer questions, and polish them. Also important, get your requests and supporting information to your teachers (for recommendations) early, so that when they are writing the letters for you, they aren't cranking them out with all the others they need to write. Good luck!

Well, obviously other things factor in heavily, but to give you the short of it, yes. That would be an okay score for an OOS student. I was 1420/2180, accepted early action with a likely letter.

^^ Agreed-- lots of factors are involved. My s was WL with a 1510/2290 and NMF (he was NMSF when he applied). He chose not to stay on the WL. He took a full tuition scholarship and $2k/yr NMS $$ from another (private) school, so it'll be much less expensive than OOS tuition at UNC.

haha wow guess theres no luck for me with a 1300.

there is hope dude.

I'm out of state, and I got in early action with a score below 1400 on the 1600 scale. I agree with everyone who says its more about the "whole package." I'm an above average student who just isn't very good at standardized testing. If your essays are well-written/creative and you have a solid transcript, you should (hopefully) be fine. Good luck!

I got in with a 1310, so you can definitely get in with a 1300. Like everyone else said, it's about the whole package not just an SAT score

i got in with a 1260(didn't actually send any SAT scores, just my Act of 31).

thanks. im just gonna hope for the best. im doing EA definitely and taking the SAT again in october, so we'll see. it just sucks to be oos

I'm an OOS Tarheel. DUDE, THINK POSITIVE!

bump
Quick Q: my stats: 3.86/4.18 GPA and 1390/2170. I also did early action and had great letters of rec and essays. Do I even have a chance?
Not a lot to go on but looking at stats from a couple of years back:
20K+ OOS applied, acceptance rate was 15%, and 25% of those actually entolled (approx.700 students)
Average M/R SAT scores for OOS students was 1,330, which includes Student Athletes form out of state
45% scored 1400+ so your scores are in the 50th percentile range for OOS.
Unweighted GPA of 3.86 is OK but the weighted score of 4.18 is low - not sure how your school calculates it.
I do not want to discourage you but the 18% cap for OOS students makes it very difficult to get in (Ivy-like stats really) so it really comes down to how well you sold your talents on the application.
Best of luck to you…
haha may be
Both of our daughters attend(ed) (one graduated) Carolina as in state students. Both scored in the mid 1300s (1600 scale) on the SAT, and both have multiple OOS friends who scored lower on the SAT. Of course, they both have plenty of OOS friends who scored higher, too. As others have said, it’s the whole package. Good luck!
