So I just got my SAT scores and I'm not sure if I should retake it or not. I really want to go to Rice, and plan to send off my application ED. I got a 2020 on the SAT with a 710 in CR, 640 M, and 670 W. My GPA kind of makes up for this 5.0 W, 3.88 UW. I know how holistic the admissions process is and kind of have everything else taken care of; I just need to know if my score is high enough. Please let me know if my scores are high enough or if I should retake it. Thanks for any feedback!

You are below the 25th percentile SAT score (2080) of Rice students. Admitted students in that range have a compelling hook: low income URM, recruited athlete, development case (major donor).

I am a URM (Hispanic, with relations to mexico) but not low income, I’m more upper middle class. Does that adversely effect the URM status ?

I’d retake it. Either way, you should take the SAT (or ACT) at least twice probably. If you don’t go up much, you’re probably still a good candidate but you could help your case with a better score.

@FenderFan54 A “hook” can be something more intangible than what was listed above. To copy something I said in another recent post, most of my friends didn’t do something extraordinary in high school – they just convinced an admissions officer that they were a real person, with goals, hopes, and desires, who would use their Rice education for a purpose. Doing that does require some evidence. So you can get in with those test scores – I’d guess about 1 of every 6 or 7 people you see at the school did. But make sure you put a lot of thought, care, and effort into your essay. It’s not really meant to test your writing skills, but rather to give the admissions officers the chance to get to know you as a person and really understand why you deserve and/or desire the opportunity to go to Rice. Impressive resume boosters or something out of your control like those listed above can help too, but if you want to know what you can do, there you go. Feel free to respond with questions!

Haha alright thanks @jfking01! I do plan on putting a lot of hard work into my essays and got Harry baulds “on writing college apps essay” ;I’ve seen it recommended on here for the essay. Just wondering, where did you apply/get in?

@FenderFan54 I applied to Rice, Washington University, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Columbia, and Trinity University. I was not accepted into Stanford or Columbia. But to show you how impressed I was with Rice, I submitted my enrollment deposit before I had actually heard back from either of those schools.

Hmm trinity? Do you live in Texas? I live in SE Houston, that’s kinda of why I’m obsessed with Rice

Nope, I’m from Kentucky. I just happened to like both schools

Also from SE Houston. The only people I know who applied to Rice this year both had SATs around where yours are (2010 and 2060) and they were both rejected with pretty stellar grades (one was salutatorian, the other good enough to be accepted at Amherst). However, they were both Asian, and therefore in a pretty competitive pool when it comes to Rice admissions. So, with this in mind, I would definitely retake it if I were you, but your demographic probably gives you an advantage they didn’t have.

My school had 3 kids that got in. One of the kids lives in my neighborhood and she told me she got a 2220. I think I’ll take it again in November and send off the scores on my ed app to rice!

What is your class rank? That is a key metric that Rice can use to measure your GPA relative to others. Every school grades differently. For example, I got in with a B average, however I was #2 in my class; my school just didn’t hand out A’s.

As for the SAT, take it again.

I am 37th out of 539 so Just within top 7%. Is that bad for Rice? Its not cause of low grades, just that I didn’t take as many 6.0 weighted (not advanced, just on a different grading scale) classes as other kids.

It all depends on the rest of your app. On its own, top 7% is very good and definitely puts you in range to get in.

BTW, nice profile pic :)

Alright thanks man! I like your profile pic too haha
