SAT scores pending

Son just applied to UMD (10/15). He sent his SAT scores on 10/15 (the May ones) and then went on 10/20 to send the October ones. Both sets are still pending. (By the way, the reason he did that is because we asked the admissions office when the scores had to be at UMD and they said absolutely by 11/1, so we figured we'd better get them in right away).

Anyway, the question is I am now very concerned these scores will not be there in time for the 11/1 deadline. Not sure what if anything I can do about it. Also, once the score status changes from pending to sent - how long is it before they reach UMD. I would think in this day and age it would be instantaneously and it is just a matter of when UMD does downloads which I would hope be on a daily or twice daily basis at this point. From the sounds of the admissions office if all parts of the application are not in their hands on 11/1, an applicant won't be considered for early action.

You should be fine for the first set of scores, and probably okay for the October scores.

From their web site: “Please note, when scores are sent electronically, it may still take 1-2 weeks for them to be processed, matched to your account and appear as received.”

My interpretation of “all parts of the application” is that it is referring to the recommendations, resume, etc.

If you want to be sure, call the admissions office or find out who your admissions rep is and contact that person (there is a link on the freshman application page).

Thank you. I had called admissions before we sent the scores and spoke to whoever answered the phone. They were not helpful at all and were the ones that told me that SAT’s must be in by November 1. I find that hard to believe though, since most colleges have a ‘grace’ period.

I have had the same question… Would rushing my scores do anything?

what I’ve heard about rushing scores is that you have to check with the college first to see if they even allow it. sometimes it hurts not helps.

Highschoolparent, please let us know if you find out more. I’m sure a lot of people are wondering!

I encourage you to call the Admissions Office again. I called this week to verify that some components of my daughter’s application were received. The person who helped me was very patient, checking on each part of the application. Note that some of the components they confirmed are not yet listed as received on the application status webpage.

I think you might be right on the parts of the application. Just clicked on my son’s account and they have the application. In checking all parts, it does not mention SAT scores, but it does mention transcripts have been received. Unfortunately, the references have not been received yet because they were sent offline, so I don’t know how long it will take from them to get there. I know they went out last Friday, so maybe that takes a few days for the mail to get through.

Plus, hsp, it will likely take them time to get the system updated to show that the references arrive.

Same here…requested scores 10/20…scores still pending!

I just checked on UMD’s website and they do not want scores rushed. They do, however, say that October scores will arrive in time to be used in EA decisions. According to the admissions person who answered the phone, she advised me to have son’s October scores sent without seeing them (taking advantage of the free score reports by a certain date). I missed the date for that because son’s list was not final, we sent the scores as soon as they were available; and since they do not like rushing it is out of my hands. I did get confirmation from collegeboard that they absolutely guarentee 2 weeks (which would be 10/31 for my first set of scores). They promise that scores will have reached UMD by that time, but may not be processed or downloaded by then. I think as along as they have been sent to UMD the deadling is met whether the scores have been retrieved or not. Not sure though, but it is what I would think. Site also says that references must be postmarked by 11/1 also - which is contrary to what the person said who answered the phone. She said everything had to be in.

My suggestion would be to continue to call and check on the status of your open/not received items.

My D Sat scores were sent and Maryland never downloaded/posted to her account for at least 2 weeks from the time Collegeboard said they were sent.

Maryland has just installed a new admissions system and unfortantely there are many system issues that need to be fixed.

I just had son email freshman contact like someone else suggested. They say right on the website that it takes up to 2 weeks to have stuff posted and to ‘please be patient’.

SAT scores finally went out today 10/28 - they really pushed it to the 2 week limit. Must have put extra computer/man-power on to get these scores out by 11/2.

Scores sent–finally. Ordered 10/20/2011.
