SAT Scores

I'm interested in getting into schools such as UC-Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, Columbia, Rice..such. The highest GPA at my school is a 4.0. I have almost a 4.0. All my classes have been honors, AP, community college classes. I have a ton of extracurriculars. My teachers love me, so recommendations aren't going to be a problem, but when I took the SAT, I only got a 1750. Are my SAT scores going to be a deterrent from me getting into those schools? Thanks.

Unfortunately yes.

Should get at least a 2100 for Berkeley and Rice

2000 for UCLA

2200 for Stanford and Columbia

Does anyone have any real advice to bring my score up big time because I’ve tried everything I can think of and my score never shoots up that much??

ok id love to help. my friend and I have this method that has drastically improved our scores. ok so first I need to know. your a Senior right or are you a Junior?

As horrible as it might sound, practice really does make perfect

I have practiced and I really am lost on what else to do. I feel so stressed lately.

I’m a junior and thank you so much for wanting to help!

ok great. then let me first off say that I am also a junior and my first SAT scores were A LOT lower than yours (1580 yikes!). but the great news it…drumroll please…YOUR A JUNIOR! you have plenty of opportunities to prepare. Seniors are the ones that should be stressing lol. ok so yes I agree with the PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE scenario. It will help. I started taking tutoring for the PSAT (and SAT) about a month ago. Through practicing I have already gotten my initial score of 1580 up to a 1790. Thats 200 points!! In a month span I have taken the PSAT 3 times, and the SAT twice (practice tests that it). Get a book that gives the explanations to the questions. It helps!! Also I suggest getting a vocab book. That can really kill ya on the CR sections if you are completely clueless on the words. Also I suggest doing a couple SAT sample tests un-timed. This way you can really think about the questions and read the passages thoroughly. It really helps to know if your getting the questions wrong because of the time constraint or if its a comprehension issue. (For example, the 2 tests I’ve done un-timed have given me a score of about 2140. So I know my problem is time. So now when I do the tests un-timed I focus or just trying to shave 5-10 minutes off). what I suggest is try to take it 3 more times (January, June, and then October of Senior year). This provides a nice spacing to improve scores. However for some people the ACT is better. Don’t feel that you have to limit yourself to the SAT. I understand the pressure you must be under for the schools you hope to attend (our school picks match up almost identically). Breathe and try not to think about the schools as you take the exam, that will just psych you out. Hope this helps :)

Either:

You’re in a very easy school or

you should take the ACT because some people do better on that test.

isn’t the general rule to take the SAT no more than 3 times! Someone is advising that you take it 3 additional times…I’ve heard that’s a big no no to go over 3 times!

And I don’t think a 2000 for UCLA is enough…I think if you’re aiming for those really selective schools, you should only think you have a chance if you have somewhere between 2200 or 2400.

I had a 2040 and didn’t get into UCSD…the most selective school I was able to gain entrance to was UCI. I had a decent-ish GPA…one of the smart slackers out there, so it was ok…I did minimal amount to stay within the top 10% of my school. And had a LOT of activities…so just giving you an idea that you need to have crazy stats to even think you have chance at these schools. Like go start a successful business or do some crazy research project…I guarentee you’ll get into some crazy school. I heard kids like that are the norm at the Ivies. All the kids at my school who got into prestigious schools did something like that. I recall one girl had one of her articles published in a medical journal in Europe…and her article was the first one ever written on that subject! She’s going to U of Chicago, but I don’t think she got into any Ivies…even the ones ranked below Chicago on the US News and World Report Ranking List, not that those rankings mean too much!

I dont think taking sat 3 more times is helpfull ( its waste of money )
why not just use Official Blue book And take timed test …

just give Sat a shot when u are satisfied with ur score .

get a blue book and take those test - really accurate

practice as much as possible.

and people are going to hate me for saying this, but looking back i regret not taking the sat more. the best practice is taking actualy exams on saturday mornings because it replicates exact conditions and the ones you look back on that you got wrong youll remember almost forever. there is score choice, and i barely think you need to worry about schools finding out if you used it or not, when they reject it. i would only possibly worry about that for ivy league schools, and even then no one knows for sure.

Can you give me a breakdown of your scores? What did you get in each section?

If it’s math you ahve to work on, then you’ll just have to learn all the math concepts.
If it’s reading, you’ll just have to read more.
If it’s writing, then just memorize all the rules and learn how to write the appropriate SAT essay.
