Hi, I'm a sophomore in high school and I just received my SAT Subject Test in Chinese with Listening. I got a 790 which aggravates me so much considering I know that it was a silly mistake. Should I retake it? Or would the 10 point difference be trivial in the eyes of an admissions officer?

Do you remember those old pokemon games we would play… it had that exp. bar for increasing levels. the higher the level, the harder to go higher. it will be difficult for you, IMHO, to go back to the test with dread of a silly mistake in your head to not overthink and maybe get even lose a few more points.
however, if you do go ahead with the retest, i hope and trust that it won’t happen and that you get the 800 that you want. good luck…

it will be quite trivial yes. it might get slight importance however, if you consider the rest of your app to be weak. but don’t sweat it

You do realize colleges arent at all impressed with native speakers who get 800s on the Chinese exam. I think taking it once will hurt you enough - dont see why you bothered in the first place.

If you look at your application (or imagine your future application) and the weakest part of it is a 790 on a Subject Test, then you can rest easy that you have done everything possible to gain admission.

I would suggest that you focus on other parts of the application instead of obsessing over one silly mistake that essentially amounts to a rounding error.

I wouldn’t worry so much about it. The difference between 800 and 790 can be just a silly mistake in one question and they are aware of it.

@SheepGetKilled I’m not chinese.

Like you said, the 10-point difference was only a matter of a silly mistake. A 790 in any SAT subject test is impressive, even more so in this case considering you aren’t a native speaker. Good job and don’t worry about it :)

If you’re not native please you did fine :)

I would not worry and start to concentrate on the real tests you will need to take.

Every time I see “790” and “retake” in the title, I hope for a ■■■■■ post. It never is.

OH ok, if you arent native then its fine. Sorry.

Don’t worry I got a 760 on the Korean with listening. I say 790 is fine.

I was in the same situation when I took Math II and got a 770. I thought it would be okay, but when the score reports came out, I found out that I was only top 25%, I retook it and got an 800. I found out later that an 800 is 15%, so it didn’t really make that much of a difference.

Looking at the score distributions on CollegeBoard, it looks like you would only go from top 52% to 36%, probably because so many of the people who take it are natives. If you think it’s worth it, I would go for it.

790 is so good why would you need to retake it
