I have a freshman son who will be finishing pre calculus this year. Does it make sense for him to take the Math I Sat subject test this year? He plans on applying to Stanford ( but who knows what will happen in the next few years). And, since he will be finishing up biology in May, should he also be taking the Sat subject test for biology at the end of the year? I think if he waits too long to take these tests, he will not have retained all of the material. I know that he will probably take the second math sat test after next year.

Actually, Math Level 2 is designed to be taken after pre-calculus. There may be a couple unfamiliar topics to your son, but if he looks through Barron’s and does some practice tests he should be fine.
If he got a study book he could probably also take the bio test in May.

My daughter took the SAT II (math 2 and bio) during the last weeks of her pre-calculus and AP-bio courses, and got 800 on both. It was probably the best timing since everything was still fresh.

Good luck.

Did he take AP Bio as a frosh? If not he should wait until after AP. Same for Math 2,wait until next year after AP Calc. He’ll be all the more prepared.

You DO NOT need AP Calc for Math 2.

Never said you needed AP Calc for Math2. I did say that waiting till after you take it will have you better prepared for Math2 test. Remember the OP’s son is a FRESHMAN.

I didn’t think about the AP biology aspect of preparation for taking the SAT 2. Thanks for the information. He is in biology honors this year. I am checking with school to see if we have AP bio ( small school not a lot of AP classes). I know there is no AP calculus. I don’t want to wait till junior or senior year to figure all of this stuff out. I feel so much more informed reading your posts.
