SAT Subject Test January 2009: Literature

I thought it was alright. There was this mythology poem where this artist crafts a sculpture that comes to life; I wasn't too sure about the questions about it.

It wasn’t too bad, I remember one of the questions I wasn’t sure about on that poem was what the “connesioers” are NOT described as and I put that they didn’t study the history and theory of sculpture. I also remembering putting that the sculptor was egotistical.

There was a question with the word sexuality on it and I got that also, and another about the sculptor’s passion. There was another question on it about what “enter demon blood” means or something, wasn’t too sure.

What did you get on the first question that asked about who should find the the person humorous: Joseph, Mrs. Shoppel, narrator, or reader?

Ah yes, i found that it was easier as i went along. But yeah the first question was a pain.
I left the first one and the second to last or last one blank.

Not disclosing any information/content or breaking any rules, just my opinionfyi, since you know, we aren’t allowed to talk about specific content and all.

urgh, i took it today as well.

i put the narrator and the reader, but i wasn’t sure. i wanted to say that joseph found the person humorous, but i couldn’t find support. I thought that the first passage and the mythology poem were the hardest to understand.

Some of the questions for the “brown bag in the corner” passage were a little odd. For example, what did the “clump” represent? I got that it represented personal characteristics. Also, how does the person feel about about himself? I put confident but aware of outside forces beyond control

^
hipster, same for the first, i think i put something else for that other one.

What about the conneseur question? And I remember putting epic simile for the first passage. I also put the last question as the trumpet’s effect as “a desire that united his present, past and future” or whatever, not sure about that though.

I found that trumpet passage quite (errgh!) abstract and difficult…

my answers were:

the “emphasis” of the drum did NOT fit with the rain.

the rain imagery had to do with his despondency.

trumpet’s effect was a sweeping something? (a) i thought about the desire option, but i couldn’t find evidence of present or future in the passage, just reflection on the past.

I put the “emphasis” of the drum did not fit in with the “presence of the piano player”

I put (a) at first, but when I read the passage it talked about how it resembled his “wants, needs, peace, love, etc…” and thought that the trumpet was a bit more than a sweeping sensation, idk really.

^ no, i’m not sure either. It was a difficult passage for me.

Well, all I know for sure was the question that asked what he was reminiscing about, which is his lover leaving him.

The passage which was a contemplation on the engine of a train/locomotive…

First question, Which is the main verb of the first sentence?

I’m fairly certain it’s “SEEMS”

the question on “which of the following words is trying to assert a fact about the engine”? (innocent/ / /…) i skipped. I honeslty couldn’t see how any of them was asserting anything factual about the engine.

I put “seems” also. For the asserting fact about the train I don’t remember what the answers were, but I remember everything else was discussing the smoke and stuff while only one of them was describing the train.

ah damn people 60 min isnt enough for me coz im an international and it takes me time to read all the text and then understand it. no way to do 60qs. in 60 min. :s

Anyone else care to place there input? The ones I’m really confused about is the first and last question. For the first I put that Joseph, the narrator and reader find Mrs. Slipslop humorous (though I think its wrong :(), and for the last one I put that The trumpet represented the desires that linked the present past and future of Kid Jones.

narrator and reader, and past, present and future.

for the sculpture/mythology one, was one of the answer I and III? it was like…he wants her all to himself and hes jealous of the fame she has?

Thanks, I was thinking that. And yeah, I got I and III for that mythology one.

For the passage about the girl who’s sad that her lover is never around, one of the questions was like “what do the last two lines do?” I put make explicit the meaning of the previous 8 lines.

yes i put the same thing! :]

oh i was really confused with this one…was the poet trying to say that readers should be like the lily?

and that the poet meant that people should enjoy their youth while they can?
