SAT Subject Tests in place of AP exams?

I know that the AP exam probably looks more impressive because it has a free response section, but if you take the SAT Subject Tests in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, US History, World History, and Math II and get 750+ on them, would they carry somewhat the same weight on your application as getting a 5 on the AP exam?

I took AP Bio and AP Spanish Lang this past year but didn't take the AP exams for them because my parents only allow me to take 4 AP exams per year (and I decided to take AP Calc BC, AP English Lang, AP Comp Gov, and AP USH) because they don't feel it's necessary to spend so much money on tests. So I'm thinking about just taking SAT Bio (both M and E) and SAT Spanish this upcoming fall in place of the APs.

How exactly do SAT Subject Test scores correlate in weight relative to AP exam scores anyhow? For example, I got a 5 on APUSH/740 on SAT USH and a 5 on APWH/760 on SAT WH.

Looks like you and me both are looking for an answer to this.

I don’t think many colleges consider the AP exams in admissions. It will depend on the specific colleges you’re applying to.

I gave you both an answer in this matter, but obviously it is not the one you want.

@csdad - Your answer didn’t tell me anything I already didn’t know. Everyone knows that AP exams are not used in college admissions. What we (TwinkieGirl and I) want to know is what kind of SAT Subject test score is needed to provide the equivalent of a 5 on an AP exam, thereby providing credit, and displaying mastery in a subject.

Since it was posted on the “College Admissions” forum I assumed you were talking about how they are weighed in admission…sorry I didn’t take the time to fully understand your question.

It’s okay, it’s actually my fault, I just didn’t know whether to put it in SAT Subject Tests or in AP section. So it ended up here.

The correlation is really big gap especially for the history tests. Personally, I would have to say that maybe something even around a 700 on U.S. History would be near a 5 on the AP Exam. It really is hard to compare since DBQs or essays can make or break you.

I think if you want a true correlation, compare the percentages of 5s on the APUSH Exam (11.8% this year) and find like the 88 percentile score for U.S. History (~740 for 2011). But I would mark the score down maybe by like 20 - 30 points to account for more time on the AP Exam and less questions on the AP Exam as well.

Note: This is my personal view. I don’t exactly know how colleges would determine if you could get a 5 on the AP by looking at the SAT II score.

@balderdash - Interesting correlation, and at least a thought provoker.

thanks balderdash, that’s a very logical process of comparing them
