Hi -
I found out recently that one of the colleges I’m applying to requires 2 SAT subject tests. This causes me a lot of stress as I have a lot on my plate and don’t know if I will have adequate time to study for the SAT again in June and then also two subject tests. I’m torn between if I should take the subject tests or not, and just not apply to that one particular school.
I read Barnard doesn’t even look at the subject tests, as they no longer require them. But I want to do everything I can to get into the school, so would it be better for me to just go ahead and take the subject tests anyway?
Thanks!
Yes, if you are taking AP classes in the same or a similar subject it would be a mistake to not take Subject Tests if a school you are applying to requires them. I don’t think that many students study for Subject Tests to the same extent they do for the SAT or ACT test. If your other stats make you a borderline Barnard applicant you don’t want to not get admitted solely because to didn’t take them. Barnard is selective but not crazy difficult to get into so getting a top score is probably not that important.
You don’t need to take the subject tests for Barnard. The admissions website says: “We no longer require SAT subject tests as part of our application review. Students who choose to take the exams for other schools to which they are applying may choose to send those scores to Barnard. However, our admissions decision will be based on only testing the that is required (SAT or ACT).” I take them at their word.
Assuming you definitely don’t want to apply to a school that requires subject tests, I would focus instead on preparing for the SAT to improve your score there.
I just got in Barnard Class of 2023 and did not send any of my SAT subject tests. Work more on studying for your SAT & ACT! Best of luck
Thank you! and congratulations!!
