SAT Subjects for sciences?

Hi, I’m still a freshman right now and currently in honors biology and I have a few questions:

  1. Will I be able to do successfully on the bio SAT test if I go buy a prep book and study it during my sophomore year (while taking chemistry)? or is there a test available at the beginning of the school year? (So that I can study over the summer)

  2. If I want to be a vet, which science (or maybe other subjects) SAT(s) are recommended? Should I take them all at once?

  3. Is it necessary to take the AP class of that subject before the test or is the honors class+prep book enough for me to do a good job (if I work hard)?

  4. I heard that the essay writing section of the SAT is now optional. Should I take it if I’m pursuing a veterinary career?

(Sorry if my questions aren’t written very clearly)

  1. You should do fine in the Bio SAT subject test. I took mine in June, after freshman year, but you can study over the summer to get an 800
  2. Bio definitely. Not sure of any other subject tests.
  3. Honors class + prep book is enough.
  4. Take the essay anyway.

I mostly agree with the above.

1/ You would have been better off taking the subject test this June, but it’s a little late now. If you study over the summer and take the October test, you should be OK

2/ Colleges do not admit by major generally, so you need to look at the university requirements. Math and a science will generally cover all your needs. Note that relative few colleges require subject tests.

3/ As stated above, Honors is fine. It seems to be a CC fallacy that an AP course is needed to be properly prepared for a subject test.

4/ Take the essay. I believe that top colleges will not make it optional for their applications.
