I think its a better predictor than grades. Out of the 8 people at my high school who went to texas A&M, I had the 7th best HS GPA, but the 2nd best SAT score.

Having compared freshman year grades with them, my 3.6 came in 2nd or 3rd, ahead of most of them who earned higher grades in high school.

In high school grades were more of a reflection of willpower and brute force studying. In college, they're more a reflection of critical thinking acumen.

In my experience, both SAT and High School GPA are very poor predictors of college success. I had a 1120 SAT (old, 2004) and a 1480 (new, 2006) and a HS GPA of 2.4 (my SAT scores got worse after 3 semesters of college!!!). Now after two years of college I have a 3.86 GPA studying Mechanical Engineering with minors of Math, Physics, and Aerospace Engineering at a decently ranked school. I will also be taking several graduate courses this year and next. Don't ever think your life is predestined by those damn standardized exams. You know your own capabilities far greater than any exam ever will.

I'm seriously thinking about refusing to take the GRE for graduate admissions. Who is with me?

While there may be a correlation between SAT score and HS GPA, there are MANY reasons why you may score poorly/well on the SAT and do well/poorly in college, respectively. Some people take SAT prep classes, others don't. Some naturally perform better on standardized tests, others don't. Some need college to actually become interested in academics, others are either already there or never will be. Don't be afraid of your college peers before you even get there, that's just foolish =P
