You probably made a few careless errors... never think of the SAT's as easy when you are taking it. Chances are your overconfidence on the test actually led to the 630...

my score went up 180 points and is still pretty pathetic but oh well

but the weird thing is I didn't practice like at all this time and the last time I took classes and each of my practice test scores just kept getting lower and lower and lower

you should have them go over it again if you really feel they made an error. With the essays; however, I don't think you'll be able to really change that.

and the colleges look at the best scores per section anyway right?

Calm down kids, you'll get into college and it will be okay, I promise.

The MC part, I can blame on myself. But the essay scoring? A LOT of people went down on this section. The graders were different and harder on us this time.

congrats on the 180+ pts.. at least it's better than nothing XD

yea we will get into a college, but maybe not the one we want. i mean just looking at all the people on this site that scored so high sort of makes you stress, you know?

There is no question that there are errors by the College Board. Everyone heard about the SAT screw up last fall and they messed up my S's AP scores from last spring. He received a 3 in A/P Bio and a 3 in A/P Geography. He also could not believe the Bio score was correct. Two months later, mid Sept, he received a letter from the CB stating they had only counted his essay not his multiple choice questions and both scores were not 3s they were 5's!!! The highest possible score. Of course by then, he was weeks into his first semester of college, to late to sign up for the more advanced Bio course.

ahhhhh......OMG........
I've been wondering about my score on the writing section too.
Compare to last time, my essay got 11 again, but combined with the MC, my mark DROPPED A LOT! :( and I didn't feel it was particularly hard or anything. My marks consistently improved too when I did all those practice exams......
I was quite surprised and shocked that my mark went down by so much....
this is weird.....

a lot of people's scores went down (especially here in cc) but in my school most of the ppl's scores went up in writing sections.

Just because about 70% went down 30% went up here doesn't mean there was an anomaly...there is ample probability that this could have happened without any fault on the collegeboard's part.

Keep in mind that the scoring problem only "affected a very small percentage of October 2005 SAT takers." (http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/scores/oct_sat_scores.html). This could be the case again this year. While quite a few people received good scores, it's possible that there was another scoring screw up for a small percentage of test takers. The screw ups last year, which only affected the MC scoring--not the essays-- were "caused by humidity in combination with the light or incomplete marking of answer sheets"-- it's October, it gets wet some places, and it stays dry in others... maybe humidity was a problem again, or a machine screwed up, or maybe this is just a fluctuation in the curve, and not a mistake. Bottom line is that a mistake, while it seems unlikey, is still possible.

It would be interesting to see where people with questionable scores are located. If score aberrations are reported by people in concentrated regions, then a mistake would seem much more plausible.

Eh, I don't know about that. I thought there was a mistake because my score came out much higher than I expected -- 2290 here. But then again, writing was my worst section by quite a bit.

yess
my writing score dropped by 110 pts and my essay score stayed the same!! theres gotta be a mistake!!! i paid $50 to have them hand grade/re-check my scantron
OH MY GOD

"I'm in the same situation. expected a 680 (took a previously administered test that I struggled on and got a 670). When I got my score back, I recieved a 580. Something is wierd. My friend got a 620 with an 8 essay and I've always beaten him on the writing section in practice (I beat him consistently on the last 10 test)."

i am on the same boat! i got a 670 last time with a score of 9 on essay. but on the october sat i only got a 560 with a 9 on my essay!? and i thought it was easier. whats up with tht!?
