SAT too low?

I'm applying to Duke ED next admissions cycle, and I recently received a 2140 (680 CR, 680 Math, 780 Writing). This score worries me greatly, because I'm concerned that my composite is too low, and I'm sure that my 1600 scale score (1360) is much too low. Terrible luck for my best score by far to be writing. I'd also like to point out that I'm Hispanic (Puerto Rican) and a first-gen if that really matters... Any opinions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

My opinion? You’ll be fine.

I think you’re right to be concerned. That score will more than likely put you in the bottom 50% as far as SAT scores go. The minority thing probably won’t help because there will likely be other Hispanic applicants with higher SAT’s. The first gen thing might help but I’m not sure how much. I think the best course of action is to pound it over the summer, retake and shoot for a 2250.

First Gen and ethnicity are only considered while SAT is very important. And your math/CR are low (near the 25%ile). http://ir.provost.duke.edu/facts/cds/Duke%20CDS_2011-2012.pdf</a> Sections C7 and C9. Have you tried the ACT?

Is it your first or second attempt? Try to improve your score over the summer and retake it in October. It should still be on time for ED. You are not far off, particularly considering your family background.

It’s my second attempt. I will be taking my last one in October

Then work hard in the Summer and aim for 1500+ for CR+M. It is feasible. Not that it is absolutely required, but it definite will increase your chance.

Keep practicing! Also, tutors and SAT prep books can be a huge boon!
