SAT verification? Has anyone done this & did it change?

S23 took the SAT for the first time on SAT school day in March; I wrote on another post:

My S took the SAT last month on school test day, and scored a 790 RW, 680 Math. He’d taken about 6 practice tests at that point since the fall, and had always scored above 730 on the math (his last several practice tests were typically 740-780 with the last one 790). But he walked out of the math test saying there were 5 questions about a concept he’d never heard of in his life. He made educated guesses, but didn’t have a great feeling about it. Opening the 680 he immediately said: I want to take it again.

He’s been doing some a little Kahn studying since then - maybe an hour or so a week - and took a SAT practice test this morning where he scored another 790 Math.

And now he’s saying that the more that he thinks about it, he wonders if there was a scoring error on his SAT. The concept he hadn’t heard of before he believes he made solid educated guesses on those questions, and the odds are he wouldn’t have gotten every question on that incorrect.

He typically would get 3-4 questions wrong on the Math portion of a practice test. Looking at his official score report from the college board this morning, it says he got 11 questions wrong on the Math. That just seems unlikely…?

He’s taking the SAT again next Saturday, and I guess we’ll wait to see what the score is on May 20th when the results are released. I suppose I’m wondering if it seems plausible that his first test had a scoring error, and if it’s worth the $55 to have it hand scored.

Thoughts?

I have seen dozens/hundreds of “College Board must have made a mistake, I know I didn’t get that many wrong” on r/SAT over the years. I’m yet to see the first “I had my test rescored and it went up” post (other than AP scores in the bizarre COVID-shortened year).

Unless the score report shows something like an omitted question and then 10 questions where the marked incorrect answer was the correct answer to the previous question, it’s unlikely the optical scanners/QA process made meaningful errors.

But I’m sure it’s happened at some point, so it’s your choice to make the investment to be sure.

He either got 11 questions wrong or he misbubbled. I have never ever seen a successful SAT rescore. Which doesn’t mean it’s never happened, but it’s rare

If you want to spend the money, go ahead.

Why bother to get it verified? Just take the test again. So much easier and you can get an additional score/opportunity to get a better score.

Update!

Didn’t bother with verification; S23 took it again 5 weeks later and got his scores back today.

Repeated his 790 Verbal, and bumped up to a 750 Math.

Woo hoo, he’s over and done :tada:
