In 2012, there were more ACT takers than SAT takers for the first time (albeit by a very small margin). However, on CC, there are over 1700 posts on the March SAT thread, while there are only about 250 posts on the February ACT thread.

Why is that? Thoughts/opinions/general comments?

I think using Feb/Mar data for comparison is not fair. Many states including Kentucky and Michigan that has mandated ACT test in March which is not available to general public. If you are a student in one of these states, you probably would not take the Feb ACT.

Fair point, but on the March ACT thread, there are only about 60 posts. Explain that discrepancy.

March ACT wasn’t a national test. Michigan and Kentucky had it; I think a few more states had it. It wasn’t every state, though.

I do think more people on CC take the SAT. Don’t know why though. Maybe because many people on here are from the East Coast/want to apply to East Coast colleges.

@renoverchat All colleges accept ACT scores the same way they accept SAT scores. I live on the East Coast.

In my opinion, the SAT is harder to study for than the ACT.
The ACT is an acheivement test and is actually pretty easy. The answers directly stated in front of you. Speed and Accuracy are just major issues for a lot of people, though they can easily be fixed by that individual.

The SAT is an aptitude test.

SAT - sure
ACT - ain’t nobody got time for that

at least that’s my initial reaction to the two.

@hero
I know that, but I mean traditionally, the East Coast took the SAT and the Midwest took the ACT, so even though colleges accept both now, people tend to just keep doing the same thing.

I don’t know why I focused on the SAT more than the ACT. I didn’t like the science section I guess.

It depends. Some students would do better on SAT, while others better on ACT. The counselors at my DD’s school recommend taking both but submit the better one. My DD took both last week. Her practice scores on the 2 tests are comparable (after conversion).

Go Go. SAT!
i guess cuz SAT is more “international”… like more known all over many countries, not just US… put in mind… a lot of the CCer are internationals after all u know… :P

The SAT is the SAT. It’s been the standardized test in the US for more than a long time, and it’s more well known than the ACT, though the ACT is becoming more prominent. Personally, I prefer the ACT because I almost never second guess myself.

I was told that Act aligns better with curriculum…and does not want to trick you…hence if you attend a HS with a strong curriculum…you are likely to do better on Act…just work on timing so you finish.
My oldest kid only did SAT…my second child tried both and did considerably better on ACT…My youngest will do both as well…
Try both…you may be surprised…and I agree with other posts…practice!
