S took ACT in May -- without the essay section -- earning a 35 composite (36 M, 36 S, 35 R, 32 M). Obviously he should have taken the essay part at that sitting, too, since one of the colleges he is interested in applying to is Princeton, which requires the essay. But he knew he had to take the SAT anyway (for Nataional Merit Scholarship purposes), so he took the SAT in June, and got a 2200 composite (740 M, 740 CR, 720 W, with a 10 essay score).

Issue 1: His ACT score is better than his SAT one, right? Can he submit BOTH scores with/on his application to Princeton (since the SAT one has an "acceptable" essay score), or will that hurt him? It would seem ridiculous to take the ACT again WITH the essay section ....

Issue 2: He received a 235 on the PSAT; is his 2200 on the SAT high enough for National Merit Scholarship purposes?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide. We're fairly clueless about this whole college application process.
