SAT Writing Section vs Literature Subject Test

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if it is easier to achieve a higher score on the SAT Writing section on the reasoning test OR the SAT Literature Subject Test ?

Is the SAT writing section easier to improve such that I can jump from 550 to 700 with lots of practice?

I know this is a somewhat strange comparison. The reason is that I am applying for foreign schools that asks me to submit one of the two scores. The schools don't care which score I submit.

Thanks so much for the help.

I would think the writing is easier… at least for me. There is no way I would improve too much with Lit, but in one years time, I have improved my writing from a 500ish to an 800ish

Hi Raza68,

Thank you so much for your input. Can I ask what prep books you used for writing ?

thanks again,

Well, back when I was at 500ish, I just used the BB and practiced and practiced. After only 1 or 2 tests, I was able to raise my score to about a 620. What I did was I went over all of my mistakes and learned from them. Then, I started to review some of the harder concepts. From 620, I went to a 700 on the SAT in March with a 9 on the essay. Then from a 700, I dipped down to a 680 on the June SAT with an 11 on the essay… so I knew I had to fix this problem… So, I started to practice with college board tests and was able to bring up my scores to a solid 760-800 every time. When I went from a 620 to a 700, I think I used the Barron’s 2400 and Barron’s 36 (Though this is for the ACT, there are still several good things in the book. For example, it talks about commas which are imporant in discerning dependent clasues and independent clauses–which has really helped me so far). Then from the 700- 800ish, I have just done alot of practice. I even, sometimes, search on the CC forum in order to look at past questions people have had with the Writing section. I then look to see if I can answer the questions correctly. As for the jump in my essay from a 9 to a 11, I basically wrote a bit more (couple of lines). I also used 15-20 high level SAT words (such as dilapidated and platitudinous). Finally, the night before I went over around 6 historical/ literary examples I could use on the essay. It worked out perfectly! Good luck.

I would expect that the Literature subject test would be harder to get a higher score on simply based upon self selection. With the writing section of the SAT you are graded on a curve against everyone whilst the subject test will grade you against people who select themselves as good at literature.
