I've been looking around CC and I see a lot of people who have less than 700 on SAT reasoning get 800 on SAT math2.

SAT Math 2 is waaaaaaaaaaaaay harder. I got 720 on my first go and 780 on my second. On reasoning I got 710 with 4 mistakes. OK those 4 mistakes were probably silly mistakes. But people who get like 650 on reasoning cannot get 800 on math 2.

Don't get me wrong i'm not whining about my relatively low scores or implying people are lying, i'm just surprised that people can get low marks on middle school math on the SAT reasoning and then get 800 on math that includes middle school and goes all the way to advanced high school Math (not including calculus).

I'm starting to think a few chance threads often have false SAT2 scores as this website (after one reads the posts), makes one think SAT2 math is easy. When in reality it gets pretty tough after say question 39. (OK maybe I do think people are lying :P).

So what does everyone think, is it at all feasible that people with around 650 on SAT reasoning are getting 800 on SAT math 2?

And please don't mention the curves, because lets face it they aren't that big a deal. I had some friends who walked into SAT2 math thinking they'd get 800 (thanks to this website) and walked out with 630s. Those same people got 650 in the math section in reasoning.

have you ever tried the IITJEE. if you call sat 1 and 2 math problems tough then IITJEE problems would seem ancient greek(or maybe hieroglyphics). im an indian and i know how tough IITJEE is. just download last years or this years papers from net and try solving it. sat 1 and 2 would seem pieces of cake. and for your clarification IITJEE are given after grade 12(2 weeks after leaving high school).

On the Level 2 Subject Test you can get a scaled 800 even if you have like 6-7 raw points less than the maximum. For each raw point below this threshold, you get 10 scaled points less.
To get a scaled 800 in Math on the SAT 1 you have to get them all right.

It’s quite realistic for the left-brained people because the subject test is more straightforward in its problems, similar to textbook style problems students are so used to, while the reasoning test requires just that: creative problem solving skills and not simply practice in plugging in numbers to find a solution (mostly) or the like.

fyi IITJEE’s full form is Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam. its very tough to crack it. 500,000+ students compete for 10,000 seats in the 12 IITs across india. plus you have to be within 500 or lees rank to get into a good IIT like IIT-Mumbai and choose your favourite subjects. the exam’s real tough. it has mathematics physics and chemistry.

and if you wanna have some taste of the real tough math try ISI(Indian Statistical Institute) entrance test. 6 sums to be solved in 3 hours. just think how tough they would be!!!

p.s. im an indian and im aspiring to be within 200 in the IITJEE. im trying for ivies nevertheless.

I got an 800 on Math II and a 750 on reasoning but for some reason I only got a 700 in Math I (even though that test was by far the easiest out of the three imo). In my opinion Math level 2 is easier than math reasoning because the questions are so straightforward. You spend very little if any time trying to figure out how to solve the problems, and most of your time simply punching numbers into your calculator. Math reasoning requires you to actually come up with a way to solve a problem (not that you don’t have to do that in Math II, but the methods of solving the problem are usually a lot simpler).

I won’t say SAT Math II is easier, but I will say it is easier to get a better grade. I have not taken reasoning yet, but I got an 800 math 2 first try.

What surprised me was that my 760 math 1 was 96th percentile, whereas my 800 math2 was 88th percentile.

Math II was WAY easier for me. I’m in linear algebra now as a senior and took geometry/algebra 2 more than 5 years ago. I simply made stupid mistakes because I didn’t remember some of the math, and didn’t really care about studying for it.

I felt like the SAT math was trying to trick me, and succeeded in doing so, and I over thought many of the problems. The Math II was a lot more my style - simple straightforward questions on topics that I’ve studied slightly more recently using equations that I like to use.

SAT Math Reasoning is harder to get an 800 on because you have to be smart AND diligent (aka make sure you get all the easy questions right too)

SAT Math II isn’t as hard because you only have to be relatively smart.

I think it’s easier to score a 800 on Math II

a) because you can get up to 5 wrong and still score an 800
b) the test is heavily, calculator based. The SAT Math tests more of your reasoning and creativity
c) There are 4 less questions

can’t complain though, i got a 780 on math ii and 800 on sat I math

I actually went the other way around. I got a 750 on the Math II, but an 800 on the SAT Reasoning. So I don’t really think there’s much of a trend. If you were to look at the entire body of students taking the SAT and the SAT II’s I’d say this is probably just a coincidence
