SATs Importance

I just found out that I got a 680 on the history SAT II and I wondering if I should retake it. I have to take the Math IIC in the fall anyway so should I do it as well? I understand that there are many factors in admission but I just don’t want there to be anything to hurt me that I might be able to fix. On the other hand, I am worried that I will do worse since I took it right after the AP test and I am not sure if I will ever know the material better than I did that week. Should I risk doing worse and go for it? How important are they as an admission factor at Brown?

I got a 630 on US History.

I got in.

Yeah, but are you a a genious with other amazing test scores, gpa and ec's? Though I have some good stuff, I am not AMAZING.

If you think you can do better, take it again. How much did you prep for it last time? If you can't really think of much else to do to study, don't take it again. Also, don't take it again if you aren't going to prep at all. That's just stupid.

I didn't prep at all for the SAT II but I had the AP test the day before so I studied endlessly for that. I am wondering if I bought a review book specifically for the SAT and studied that over the summer that I would improve. I am worried, though, that I will never know the material as well as I did then and will end up doing worse.

Yeah, don't worry at all about it, I had a similar situation. Just get above 700s on three other SAT 2s.

Okay, seriously... the SAT IIs were horrible for me.

The best score I got was a 710 on Math I. I got a 690 on Writing, 630 US History, 620 Literature...

Oh yeah, and then a 440 on Spanish. Whoops. Bad choice for a third test.

If you don't think you have good enough SAT IIs, you can always take the ACT. Then you don't have to worry about all the different scores.

If I decided to send in the ACT, could I still send in an SAT II but not the SAT I. I ask b/c I got a 760 on the bio (which I was very happy about) and I would like to send that. Would I have to send all of them, though, to send just one?

I'm not sure if Brown looks at the ACT and the SAT IIs together. I thought that they took the best score from either the ACT or the SATs.

Your history score isn't that bad. I got a 660 on it and was fine with it; however, I didn't send in my SATs. If you retake it in the fall, you will have to retain all the information you learned over the summer. Personally, I think your time would be better spent volunteering, working or writing your essay. All of these say more about you than a score on the SAT IIs.
