Saturday in the square/university day

G: I agree with all that AlwaysAMom wrote. This isn't hearsay, but really IS the situation. I have never heard of anyone getting that invitation and being waitlisted (not talking those getting waitlisted who did not get an invitation). Not all admits will get this invitation. But those who do, are admitted. It is not rumor. The event is FOR ADMITTED students, just like so many colleges have open houses in April for admitted students. The only difference with NYU is that the open house for admitted students is not for every admitted student but for a certain percentage that they are trying to get to matriculate, plus I don't think they could have the entire quantity of admitted students come on one day and accommodate them all. In fact, AFTER the invitations went out, they were still reviewing applicants for admissions through March.

NYU's own official message boards in both years past and now discuss this. Many have called NYU and I have seen text of confirmations of what this invitation means. If this were just a rumor, I understand but this really is an indication of a forthcoming letter of admission. Nobody is gonna get invited to an accepted student event who is not accepted or who is waitlisted either. Call NYU if you wish to remove doubt. My D's male friend also just got this invitation and I know he is an outstanding candidate. Those I know who got it know this means they are admitted. If I knew nothing about this, I'd wonder too but last year, I read so much information that I knew when my D received it, what it meant.

I have no idea about that third hand information from another student but I do know I have read official stuff and many accounts of written things and phone calls, and NYU's own board to know this is the real deal.

I'm confident your son is admitted. In a week, he should have that letter in hand. They had to send the invites out early enough so people could make travel plans, that's all. But their admissions letters go out at one time for everyone.

To someone who asked if one can be admitted who did not receive this invitation, the answer is YES.

Susan

G: one more thing....hint...the invitation reads "for outstanding students in the ENTERING class of 2006"....a waitlisted student is not in the entering class, for now.

Susan, I believe you, and can't help wondering if someone who didn't have as much good luck started this rumor. I'm at work today, but will check back later.

gail

its good to know that there is still hope....it just gets you so down when you havent heard anything and the only left for you to do is freak yourself out...its comforting to know that everyone at CC knows what im going through...thanks

First, thanks to soozievt for clarifying on Saturday at the Square. In my way-too-late in the night reply I wasn't thinking cohesively. My original intention was to say that parents are of course welcomed and will participate in the events of the day, except for the one for students only. That was what I meant when I said there is no use for the parent to go "in the student's place". Sorry if my meaning wasn't clear. Good catch, soozievt.

wicked, here's an official clarification on S@S:
If you receive an invitation to S@S, it is "a sign of great news to come soon". This is the phrasing I used in 62, the first post, and that term is the only one that can be used because it is nonetheless, not the official letter of acceptance, so we cannot say that you've been accepted.

Now, that said, edmond, I personally have not heard of anyone being waitlisted or rejected after receiving a letter from S@S. The only reason why I can see someone being rejected after receiving an invitation is that their senior year grades were much lower than their previous academic history or their SAT scores were not matching up with the self-reported ones. These are definitely not common occurrences. And I can’t think of any reasons why they’d be waitlisted. As you said yourself, maybe a student who wasn’t able to beat the competition of his or her year may have started the rumor.

Additional info: If you’re looking for hotels to stay at, go to: http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/dept/lingu/events/nels32/nychotel.html. This is a website put up for a conference in the linguistics department, but it gives great information on hotels around the area and further. A good starting place. I can also personally recommend Hamptons Inn Chelsea and Holiday Inn SoHo/Chinatown. Both are hotels I or my family has stayed at and we’ve had enjoyable experiences. Rates typically change with the season, so ask the hotel if they have NYU discounts. You can also call the RSVP line and see if they have any recommendations/special rates for Tisch S@S attendees.

Thanks for coming on and helping prospective students and their families because it always helps when they hear from current students. I hope you guys that got the invite really believe us about what it means :D.

Tischartsrep....which department at Tisch are you in?

i hope my comment about the waitlist didn't confuse anybody....

i WAS on the NYU/Tisch waitlist last year -- but I DID NOT recieve an invite to Saturday in the Square.

sorry!!!!!

I'm in the drama department, a sophomore in Experimental Theatre Wing. There are multiple Tisch Arts Representatives for just about every department in Tisch except the graduate programs I believe.

Hi tisch-arts_rep!

How were students chosen to attend this event?

If I'm majoring in Dramatic Writing, will it be tough for me to apply for a double major within Tisch for Film and Television (assuming I already have a good amount of experience in the area)?

Thanks for the help. :)

Tischartsrep...yes, I recall the Sat. in Square event having many helpful students from every part of Tisch there. Hope my daughter crosses paths with you some time though she is in CAP21. She has a long time friend who is a senior in ETW. The faculty person who was my D's adjudicator for admissions was from ETW and seemed very nice.

If we haven't recieved a University Day invite, is it still possible that we will be accepted? In other words, are they only for a select few of the addmitted? As Saturday in the Square was?

Hi - I'm going to Saturday at the Square, I applied to Film & TV.
I really want to make NYU happen, but I have a weird financial situation... (my EFC was only about $4k)... Since I have pretty good stats/S@S invite/a large financial need... do you think I will have a chance at an above-average grant? I know NYU Tisch is especially stingy...

Also, I believe it was soozievt who's D is a Tisch Scholar - from what youve said about Tisch Scholars, I must say congrats to you & her both, that sounds like the most amazing thing ever and I would do anything for that kind of opportunity! WOW

OMG! Update!!!

I just got a letter from NYU... I got into the Tisch Scholars Program!

This is AMAZING

Tawny:WOW THAT IS GREAT! I am very happy for your exciting news. Tisch Scholars is a wonderful program with some neat people in it and some very interesting opportunities and experiences. We didn't even know it existed until the letter came last year. You will for sure be meeting my daughter as the Tisch Scholars meet every other week. She just came back from the trip to Appalshop and loved it. If you go to Tisch, you'll go next March with just the freshmen Scholars. Sincere congrats and if you have a question, I MAY be able to answer it. There is a luncheon for Tisch Scholars at the Sat. in Square event and some current Scholars and Deans and faculty who run Scholars explain it, and the current kids answer questions and share their experiences in it. Your parents join you, they feed you, and you also meet the other 15-18 incoming freshmen selected from all areas of Tisch. Bravo to you and best wishes.

Soozievts, or anyone who knows...

Can you please explain what Tisch Scholars exactly is? I have put together some parts from different post, but it would be very helpful if you could explain in one post what it is and how you get in (I am guessing from Tawny's post that you find out around the same time that you get your acceptance, but I could be mistaken)

THANKS

-Zal

Zal, I answered this in post #40 on THIS thread so rather than write it all up again, I am going to copy and paste that part of that post here again. Then, if you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask and I MAY be able to answer. By the way, this is something you get selected for but do not apply for (other than your regular college application).

My previous answer:

For Tisch Scholars, the students are selected (I'll quote from parts of the letter) for "oustanding credentials as an applicant."....."Tisch University Scholars Program is an honors and leadership training program for emerging artists and scholars of the highest caliber."....."Incoming University Scholars are selected on the basis of academic and artistic excellence, as well as a demonstrated record of community service and leadership potential." I can't say why my D was selected and we didn't even know such a program existed until receiving the notification of selection. But I know it was not strictly based on stats as hers are surely NOT the highest of ALL applicants, though she had a strong academic record. In retrospect, once we read more about Tisch Scholars, it occurred to us that some of her essays really dovetailed with the kinds of students they were looking for because she described some activities she had done where she was a leader, initiator, and creator as well as service to her community in the arts. Tisch Scholars embodies that same kind of thing so I can see the fit there, though we had no idea at the time of application that such a program existed. There are about 15-18 Scholars chosen from all disciplines within Tisch.

Throughout the year, they participate in an enrichment program of special events, invited speakers, and discussions. Each scholar has to maintain a 3.5 GPA while in the program, and take on leadership roles in student activities and fulfill a community service requirement in the arts in the city each year. Each student participates in two trips fully funded by the program. The trips are cross-cultural encounters. As freshmen, Scholars travel to Appalshop which is in Appalachia in Kentucky, for workshops and creative projects with leaders in that arts community. Besides leadership skills, they explore issues of art, culture, and social change. (My D has led artistic activities in our community that were about social change as well so this really relates). In soph or junior year, each Scholar will go on an international trip with the group (this year was India, next year is Brazil, for example) and work with leaders in the arts there. Being in this program is a commitment. My D just returned from Kentucky last night and all I know so far was that it was a great experience and that the other kids in it became new friends. I hope to hear more today. My D also has an ongoing job in the city working in musical theater programs with youth. So, that is what Tisch Scholars is about. I think other schools at NYU have Scholars programs as well because my D's close friend from HS (my D graduated early after junior year and so her peers are currently in the senior class) just got selected as a Scholar at Stern.

Tisch Scholars is UNrelated to scholarships. No money is involved toward tuition or anything. However, all the trips and other yearly events are fully funded by the program.

PS...I don't recall the exact day we got this letter about Tisch Scholars last year. The letter head is dated March 17. I know that it arrived AFTER March 23 because I know my D came home from the hospital on the 23rd and I recall this letter arriving once she was in a hospital bed in our house and so I think it was during the last week of March and since Tawny got it today, that makes sense.

"Tisch Scholars is UNrelated to scholarships. No money is involved toward tuition or anything."

However, the University Scholars Program is listed under Tisch in the "School-based Scholarships" section in NYU's undergraduate admissions site.

So I'm a little confused - it has nothing to do with getting a scholarship award?
Can we expect to get scholarships?

Tawny, I do not work for NYU :D. Tisch Scholars are selected in the way I just told you and does not seem related to money.

Separately from Tisch Scholars, my D did win a Trustee Scholarship. Different name, different letter. THAT was a merit based grant (mulah). You don't have to apply for financial aid to get a Trustee Scholarship. Some posted here last year that they won one (they were not Tisch Scholars) and had not applied for aid. My D did apply for financial aid. I was told by the financial aid office that a student who had won a Trustee Scholarship could have a higher amount in their merit based award if need based aid was also applied for.

I do not think this is related to Tisch Scholars. I showed you the criteria for Scholars. I do not know the exact criteria for a Trustee Scholarship. Perhaps Scholars Program is listed under School based Scholarships because it is a school based honors thing and there is money involved insofar as everything in the program is paid for....all the events and trips. I am just commenting. You'd have to ask an NYU official more than that.

I have no idea if other Tisch Scholars also won Scholarships. I really believe these are separate things. I know my D got both but I don't think that is a given and have never seen it mentioned as such, nor was it the constant pattern of any posters on here in the past.

Thanks soozie for that clarification.

I noticed there was a separate Trustee Scholarship thing on the site as well - how exciting for your D to get both!

I applied for finanical aid (and my EFC is very low) so hopefully if I do get some sort of award it will increase b/c of my need. I want to make Tisch happen - especially with this opportunity to be a Scholar.

I'm hoping for the best for you. I imagine even if you don't win something like a Trustee Scholarship, you will get a financial aid package based on your FAFSA. I have read the merit scholarship descriptions before but can't find the site/page where they describe them any longer.

Though the Trustee Scholarship was WONDERFUL and a big SURPRISE, most aid has other elements besides scholarships, so expect some loans in the package and work study (we turned down work study but do have loans). Even if your EFC is about $4000, the entire rest of tuition/room/board is unlikely to be ALL grant. Some should be and some will be loans. In other words, I'm doubting that $44,000 of the fees will be in the form of a grant.

Yep - I'm expecting a nice, big loan in my package.
Just going to have to wait and see what I get and what I can do to afford Tisch.
