SBU or UCONN?

I’ve been accepted into both Stony Brook University and the University of Connecticut, and to the University Scholars and Honors College respectively. I also received scholarships from both, and money is no longer really a factor in my decision. I want to go into Pathology with a focus on research, so I’d like to go into an MD/PhD program, but at the very least, medical school. I want an undergraduate education heavily centered on math and science, and as much research opportunities as possible. Which school would be better suited for what I want and why? I’d like to hear about the strength of each school’s degree (reputation) in the field, strength of academics, availability for research (preferably as a freshman or as early as possible), chances of getting into MD/PhD programs (otherwise known as the Medical Scientist Training Program), and success after graduation, but I’d also like to factor in things like housing arrangements, food, location, professors, etc. Input from anyone who has gone to either of the schools and wants to do/has done something similar to me would be great. Thanks!

anyone?

I would recommend Stony Brook because there is a school of medicine is right next door to the main campus whereas UConn Medical school is in Farmington about 30 miles away. I think that would open up more research opportunities.

But I think both schools would be good. You have to see which one you would feel more comfortable in.

Ive attended SBU amd im trying to transfer to UCONN. DO NOT GO TO SBU!!! Im in the engineering program as a freshman and I’ve had TA’s not answer my emails 2 weeks before the exams and then emailed the professor and still got no response. I then went to both office hours and found them missing from there office. In my first engineering course weren’t notified of any grades until after we took the final exam because they never graded it until the last second. The professors care more about research than teaching. Teachers have bullied me for asking questions in the recitation classes. Living on campus was aweful, every single person goes home on the weekend. The food is extremely expensive and the dorms are very outdated. My cousin is doing research at uconn and has her bachlors in civil and she was offered a research position to get her PHD and she said they are much more helpful there and its an all around better campus. Hope my input helps. let me know if you have questions, i have tons of info but didn’t want to rant. PS my friend at school are trying to transfer to uconn as well…

Both schools are very good academically, but the environment is different. Stony Brook is a “suitcase”/commuter school, the vast majority of students either commutes every day or goes home on weekends. If you’re not among those returning home for the weekend, it can make for lonely weekends, and the campus is quite empty at night. However, it’s the “science flagship” of the state of NY. (Did you look into this scholarship? http://www.hesc.ny.gov/pay-for-college/financial-aid/types-of-financial-aid/nys-grants-scholarships-awards/nys-science-technology-engineering-and-mathematics-stem-incentive-program.html )
UConn is more rural, self-contained, with a strong athletic tradition. It’ll be closer to a “traditional college experience”. The students come for a greater variety of majors, which can be a plsus or a minus depending on what you want.

Being in the Honors college at both, you’ll be equally prepared for the track you’re aiming for. However, you may want to compare the benefits of Honors at each college, if that breaks the tie.

^^^hit it right on the head of the nail. And btw I forgot to say my cousin that was offered the research position to get her PHD was in the UCONN Honors program. They have separate housing for honors dorms. And SBU has the hospital for the MD part. However, my dentist went to UCONNs dental school over SBU cause he said it was a better program just trowing that out there
