@sbuadmissions - Question regarding Onsite

Hello,

I am a senior at the Bronx High School of Science, and a team of 4 admissions counselors visited yesterday. I was told that I would need to send my midyear reports in before a "positive admissions decision" could be made.

Here are my applicable scores:
GPA: 80.80, with positive trending apparent throughout junior & senior year
SAT: 1300/1600 (CR: 680 | Math: 620)

Thus far, my senior year grades:
Evil in Literature - B+
US Government - A
AP Computer Science A - A+
Precalculus - C
Organic Chemistry - C+
Electronics - A-
Physical Education - A
Leadership - Pass

We are currently in the 2nd of 3 marking periods for this term. I have improved thus far in senior year in: US Government (previously B), AP Computer Science A (previously A), Organic Chemistry (previously C-).

SUNY Stony Brook is my first choice, and I am extremely concerned that I may be rejected or waitlisted. Based on what I've provided, do you have any ideas as to what I may expect? I understand that it's impossible for me to paint an entire picture for you without copying/pasting my entire application into this thread, so I'd understand if you decline to answer this question.

As for extra curricular activities: I'm a member of the student government at Bronx Science, and have been actively working on various projects throughout the past four years- the most notable being the creation of the student body website, which is soon to be placed as link on bxscience.edu's frontpage.

I submitted an EA Common Application. I noticed that the actual application was downloaded on 11/17, while the supplement was downloaded on 12/3. Is this considered a "good" or "bad" sign, or does Stony Brook download all the supplementals at once?

Thanks a lot for your time,
Mark

i did the samething...and i received nothing

They don't download all at once. . . it can be in pieces.
It isn't a big deal that it was downloaded after 11/15
They're swamped so there isn't anything to worry about
Your GPA is low but your SAT is very high. Even because of the GPA, they won't just treat your application like crap, they take every one seriously.
I guess if your mid year report shows you improved then they will probably accept you, hell they may even accept you now, but idk, thats my opinion.

I'd say that if whoever you spoke with on Wednesday said they can't make a decision until you get your midyear grades, then it's likely you will be deferred to regular decision.

Chris

Thanks for your prompt reply, Chris! Do you have any idea how much weight teacher recommendations would have in this process? Thanks again.

Recommendations and essays are rarely going to make the difference, unless there's really something outstanding there. It's tough to say.

Chris

Thanks for the reply, Chris. I have sent a total of three recommendations- one from my counselor and two from teachers.

I guess all I can do at this point is continue to excel in my senior year, and hope that's enough to get me accepted to SUNY Stony Brook when it's time to send my midyear reports. Would you know if Stony Brook often makes decisions based on the outcome of first term senior year (deferred to accepted)?
