i was approached the other day by a lady from Mauro Hair Studio in Beverly Hills who said she was offering ten girls at USC a chance to get 4 visits worth of hair treatments for a major discount. total scam? what do you think?

No idea.

I got ripped off by the store in Commons though. Full Throttle cost $3 there, but I found a vending machine selling it for $2. >=O

If the discounted price is cheap, take it!

Many items at Commons are obscenely overpriced. For example, the single-serving Cheez-It bags are $.99 while vending machines charge $.50-$.75 for similiar items, and even that is well above the wholesale price.

I've heard of these before- the big catch is that you have to pay it all up front, and you don't get to choose the treatments you want. The 'coupon' they sell you is good for something like one haircut, one color, one deep conditioning, one highlight session, etc (I don't remember precisely, but that's the general idea). So, if you actually plan on doing all that stuff anyway, it's a good deal. But if you don't color your hair, you're paying for something you wouldn't normally do, so even though you're getting a discount they're getting you to spend money with them that you wouldn't have otherwise spent.

edit: oh, and obviously the thing about paying up front is that they're hoping you only actually come in for the first couple of visits and forget about the later ones. Or, if you go and you're unhappy with the first visit, too bad, because you've already paid for the whole thing up front.

happycappy...the same thing (with the same salon and everything) came over to me also yesterday. I was sitting by the fountain across from Tommy Trojan. The two guys that were talking to me were a little weird and I didn't like the whole paying up front thing... so I totally thought that it was a scam...

You know what they say, "If if sounds too good to be true, it probably is." If you are being bugged on campus, don't hesitate to contact Department of Public Safety--that's what tuition is paying for--so you don't have to be prey to slimey scams. I'm sure your folks wouldn't want you harrassed by all these salesfolks.
