I could really use some help here. I am really worried that when Tulane gets my final transcript they might rescind my admissions and/or my scholarship! I am doing fine in all of my classes (I'm taking AP Lit, AP Euro History, AP Calc, AP U.S and Comparative Gov, A.P Physics, PE, and Debate) except in AP Calc. I have always struggled with math, but have always fought and kept my grade in math at or above a C+. This last semester of senior year though has been weird. First off it is really only have a semester of calculus, because we are spending have the semester reviewing for the AP test, which will not afford us any assignment points towards our grades. This means that we only have 3 tests this semester, one of which I limped through, and the most recent one I bombed. To explain, due to snow days it has been 8 days between our last class and the test, and due to this and an internet failure I could not talk with my teacher for help. What this all means is that no matter how hard I work I do not think I can end with anything better than a D or D+. Do you think Tulane would rescind my admissions or scholarship because of this? If it helps I will get A's or A-'s in all my other classes and have a 3.5 GPA now. Thank you.

This seems to come up every year for at least one student, usually 2 or 3. The short answer is as long as you graduate high school you are fine. Especially since in your case you are only talking about one class that is a complete anomaly compared to all your other classes. Obviously if you can pull out a C or C- so much the better, but you can rest assured that your admission will not be rescinded, nor will your scholarship. Just out of curiosity, which scholarship did you receive?

Best of luck to you at Tulane.

mhawke…relax. you are taking an extremely difficult course load. it is apparent that you are not slacking off. don’t worry. you will be fine!

The scholarship I got was the Academic Achievement Award

Great! So, hope you are feeling a little better about this now. You are fine.

Quite honestly, admissions say they care about your second semester of your senior year, because they don’t want you to fail out. But in reality, they really don’t have the time or want to take the effort to go back and look through your files to verify you did well enough. So I wouldn’t worry at all. It’s more for the parents to scare their kids by saying you still have to study hard because your grade matters.

This is a relief to us as well, because my son has a CRAZY AP Env Sci teacher (no, seriously… nuts) and he’s panicked that he’ll fail that class and lose his admission to Tulane. (he has plenty of science credits to graduate without it)

That is a shame mavitale. But I feel pretty confident that as long as the rest of his grades on similar to his past grades, it shouldn’t be an issue. Hopefully he won’t actually fail the class and none of it will matter.

My son is freaking out on this as well, and is terribly worried about losing his scholarship to a smaller but very competitive liberal arts college. He has straight A’s in all classes this year, four out of the six are AP, except he is dangerously close to failing AP Calc D. The first time he has even had lower than a B in his twelve years of school. I think he is ready to have a heart attack, poor kid. This too, is a major teacher issue that, unfortunately is too late to do anything about. If he fails, you really think he will be okay?

I think so, because it is AP Calc D (I didn’t even know it went as high as D!). Obviously not required for him to still graduate, and that sounds like it is the equivalent of a 200 level college course, at least. I would be very surprised if it hurt him, especially if he gets all A’s in his other classes. It would be obvious there is some other issue at play.

Just curious, what does the school principal say about this teacher? It can’t be only your son that is having an issue.

You are right, it is not only he having the issue. I have never interfered until this year and when I found out that she had taken 9 weeks to get tests back (during which time he had had at least one other test and, several quizzes) I finally called the head of the math department who said I was not the first to bring this up…he went to the principal and they said that it would not be happening again and they would monitor her…guess what…it was too late…there was just not enough time to catch up. They told me someone else would be teaching that class next year…again, doesn’t help us.

What second semester senior doesn’t slack off? (I suspect this is why my son’s high school doesn’t even bother with finals for second semester seniors.) My son has a similarly tough schedule (AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Econ, etc.), and his grades have fallen. I am not losing sleep over his Tulane admission, and his merit scholarship is undoubtedly safe, as is yours, so long as you both graduate. You shouldn’t be overly concerned. Just make sure you don’t flunk anything!
