Essays:
I'm still working on commonapp essay. I like my "Second Essay" mainly because it's really different (I hope).

Recs should be fine

…
What are my last minute improvements?

What’s your rank?

no offense, but your profile is actually so asian… i think MIT is a better fit for you.

Great CR score, though.

Our school doesnt do rank publically, so I have no idea. I’m sure I’m in the top 10%, but cant go any more specific than that. I was originally thinking of MIT, but I was just told that our school hasn’t sent a single student to MIT in the last 35 years. (I’m still applying though).

Please tell me more!

What does SCEA stand for? Tell me pls =]

Single Choice Early Action

er…you live in canada. which means that you’re going to be evaluated against a really tough international pool. plus you’re asian, plus you need financial aid- not to be harsh, but these are all factors working against you.

you have GREAT test scores and a good GPA but your course load isnt that difficult compared with a lot of yale applicants. also, your ECs seem pretty weak. elaborate on the math thing, please- which contests? and what was your score in AIME/did you get any awards?

i think you have an okay chance, but yale is competitive, so you’re basically in the same boat as the rest of us :/

at this point, the only thing’s in your control is your essays. Don’t write about anything cliche like “China has a distinct culture, Canada has a distinct culture, I struggled at first and then strive and this culture shock define who i am now” lol.

The contests that I mentioned are Canadian and made by UofW and is national. You can google to find out more.
I got a 4 on AIME, seems unimpressive, but AIME II '09 was rediculously hard. I was getting 7-9 on the practice ones.
I took the HARDEST courses my school offers, so I cant really improve anymore there.
I thought yale had this “need-blind” policy.

I’m writing the commonapp essay on the impact of math competitions on my life, followed by “my burning desire to achieve greatness in the field of mathematics”. Second essay satirises the common applicant’s essay. (I’m trying to prove my math logic skills during it).

tough reach I’d say…

I want your CR score

I wouldn’t rule Yale out. I live in New Haven and my family has a strong connection to university. I don’t think anyone ever has a good chance of getting into Yale, but I do believe that there is a line that defines you as a good or bad candidate. The goal for you now is to push yourself even further and show more uniqueness because there are maybe 6000 students with identical applications to yours that are applying to Yale.

On the other hand, there is always luck in the process. For example, a girl from my school got into Yale with an 86 GPA because her mom was the varsity basketball coach at the university. However, no family connection to the university has any value whatsoever until the applicant is a good candidate academically.

I was born and raised in Canada, can I just say I’m white? My first language was english. My parents are chinese, but still…

Um, no- I don’t think you can say you’re white if your parents are Chinese, sorry :frowning: Besides, do you have an Asian sounding last name? That’ll give it away…
And actually I was wrong- youre right Yale is needblind to Canada  woot! So…yeahh…overall I’d say you have all the right credentials, and now you just need a little bit of luck :stuck_out_tongue: Don’t worry too much though, I’m fairly confident you’ll get into at least one HYMPS

low-match i’d say
