I’m just curious, how has it worked for you guys? do you guys prefer going to school at night or in the morning? Which one works the best?
I’m leaning towards going to school in the morning and being available to work at night. That way i can also join a sorority if it want… what do you guys think? What if it was vice versa? Would it still be possible to join a sorority (going on dates, etc)? Pros and Cons?
My job is perfect and very flexible. I work at a daycare so I will never work past 7. On some days I work mornings, other days I work closing but It has worked out well for me.
Last semester I also worked at Applebees and that was significantly harder as I only had weekend hours. I worked friday-sunday and by the time I got out i was too tired to do anything. I had a lot of time during the week but nothing really happened until Thursday (bar nights) which I was too young for, so that sucked.
I might be pledging this semester so I’m hoping it’s possible!
Sometimes there isn’t really an option. Not all classes are offered at night, especially when you get into the upper level courses. Many freshman/sophomore level courses have multiple sections available with several options for lecture times. Upper level courses often only have a single lecture section (with multiple discussion sections). If that’s the case, you simply have to take the course when it is offered and work the rest of your schedule around it. These classes will typically be offered in the morning and early afternoon rather than at night.
I’m not really a morning person, but I do prefer to have my classes in the morning. I work about 20 hours a week and it’s mostly in the evenings. On days that I don’t work, I like to have that extra time at night after I get home to get studying and such done.
I had classes during the day and worked primarily at nights. I also worked in a lab during the day but I just worked that around my class schedule. Sometimes I was able to work out my schedule so that most of my classes were TuTh, so I have full days (or nearly full days) on MWF to work as well.
There is something I would like to caution you about (besides the obvious, don’t overload yourself, make sure you prioritize your school work and drop a commitment if you have to, etc, etc). I worked with a couple of other people in sororities and fraternities (some who were already members when I worked with them and some who pledged while we were working together) and it was hard to work nights and participate in sorority/fraternity meetings/events/activities. A lot of them had meetings and such at nights and it was hard for them to work their schedule around it. Just something to keep in mind. I know a lot of people who worked and had class during the day, especially if you work on campus. There’s often enough time during the day to do both. The difficult part is having long enough breaks in your schedule (before, after, or between class) to be able to put in a full shift (many places, in my experience, want at least a 3-4 hour shift, but that will vary).
I have classes in the morning/around midday and I work in the evenings and on weekends. This works well for me. On days when I’m off from work I still have to get up early in the day and do something with myself instead of sleeping the day away. I work ~15 hours a week (retail) and have 4-8 hour shifts once or twice on the weekends and one or two 3.5-4.5 hour shifts during the week. This coming semester especially, I am lucky to be able to put all of my classes in compact chunks each day, instead of being spread out. Since my job is off campus it would be extremely impractical to go to class, go to work, and return to class.
