So.. I've decided on going with math for my major (the decision process has itself been quite a struggle!)

I'm going to be a second year this Fall 2012. I'm taking phys. 7A and math 54 this summer. (Gonna take the pre-med sequence, just because I like the classes, and at some point may consider applying to med school..)

Anyways,

Fall 2012 schedule,
Math 55 (Haiman)
Stat 133 (Ibser)
Stat 134 (Pitman)
Math 128a
Math 110

Evans is teaching 140 and he said you only need 53, 54 for it, I was thinking of taking that class with him, switching out 128a for it, other classes I'm considering switching out 128a for are math 115 (Num. theory w/Ribet) or 126 - PDEs with Stamm.

Let me know what you think, is it too much, is it doable, is the order wrong, is there something I'm missing altogether? I'd really appreciate your advice. As far as how I'm performing this semester, well, I wrote a perfect paper for Neu's Midterm just recently (math 53) and also a perfect paper for Chem 1A (Nitsche). I don't want to gloat, but I suppose if you're going to appraise my skills in giving me advice for next semester, I guess those are some representative indicators.

I am international applicant. I have a question for Berkeley student.
When I submitted my application, I wrote “math” as a my major. But, I feel now I also like economics and business. Would it be possible that I change my major in my first semester? or even before the enrollment?

Also, would it possible that I graduate with 2 major? economics and computer science?

Some info: international applicant from Asia (not Chinese, not Japanese, not Korean, not Indonesian, not… guess ? :D)
Stat: IMO medals

Accepted at UCSB, UCSD, UCD, UCLA so far. Waiting for my Berkeley decision???

I heard Stat 134 is almost as hard as Math 104 from various people, but depending on your own ability both may be a joke (heck I took math 104 alongside 8 other technicals). Math 55 is a joke, same with 110. Math 128a requires a bit of work if you don’t know programming. Math 140 will be extremely hard for you seeing that you have not taken any form of topology/analysis before. I would hold off math 140 until you have taken math 104 or take both at the same time.

Either way, either drop stat 134 or math 128a/140 to make your life manageable UNLESS you’re really confident in your topology/stats/programming skills. Perhaps switch one of the tough/heavy workload classes for number theory.

There is very little relationship between math 53/54/110 and math 113/104/185/140 series. Most of the people who were in my 104 class got A-/A/A+s in 53/54/110 but struggled like heck in 104. Similar cases for 113/140/etc. Perhaps take math 55 over the summer and instead take math H54 in the fall to expose yourself to a bit more rigor.

tl:dr It’s doable if you’re good at math/programming. If not, your gpa will most likely die just due to workload.

@Fora, thanks for the reply man, you seem to know your stuff.

My other friend was telling me Stat 134 was hard as well. Professor of 128a (Persson) says course will be in Matlab, which makes it seem not so scary anymore. Evans, who will be teaching 140, said all you need is 53/54 for the class, and he seems to be a very beloved professor, I’m not sure though. I honestly wouldn’t even consider taking 140 unless Evans was teaching it and the fact that he said all you need is 53/54, it seems like a really interesting class the way he was selling it.

<nerdmode>So, I was thinking of self-studying a lot of the material in 55, 110, 134 and 104 in my spare time. I have the Chartrand, Axler, Bertsekas and Rudin book at my disposal and might peruse them to entertain myself. The only really intimidating one is Rudin. I’m starting with the friendly and approachable Bryant book to make it a little less intimidating. </nerdmode>

So to sum up… Stat 134 = Math 104 in difficulty. Math128a = programming. 140 = wait until you take analysis/topology. I was thinking of H110 instead of 110 in the fall. So… H110, 55, 128a, Stat 133/134. Core Stats/Maths classes. Then Spring, we have to see what they offer, but tentatively, maths 113, 104, stat 135, 150, 153.

Sounds good. However, H110 depends heavily on the professor. For example, this fall, Harrison (H110 prof) went over exterior algebra (so essentially bits and pieces of 250A and 250B) and other graduate-level topics. If Holtz does the same this year, you will not survive that schedule. However, more than likely, she will not so you’ll most likely be okay.

I don’t know about stats 135, 150, and 153, but since the general vibe I receive is that they’re significantly easier than stats 134, I think you should be fine.

Both semesters quite reasonable (well at least compared to mine…)! The only variable here is math H110, which could quite possibly be the hardest undergraduate math class you take at Cal depending on what you go over.

Whoa! Okay, so maybe I’ll consult with her (O. Holtz) and see what she will be covering then make my assessment after that. It sounds doable, but yeah, the only thing that could be really scary is the 110/h110 differential.

No. On the contrary, 104 is completely unrelated to 53 and 54. People who have not taken math 1a or 1b could theoretically take 104 and succeed.

They only recommend the other classes due to what they call ‘mathematical maturity’

104 can be taken successfully without 53 and 54 or even 1a and 1b
Heck, Caltech teaches our math 104 as their math 1a, if that tells you anything. So, kids straight out of high school who probably have only taken calc bc go directly into their math 1a (our 104).
