Hi,
I’m gonna be a junior next year and I cannot figure out if I shout take Functions/Analytic Geometry (Precalc first semester with calc objectives second sem) or Fuctions/Trig (Precalc). The names are weird in my country, Ik. Both classes are a full weight. Either will get you into AP Calc AB, but only Functions/Analyt will get you to AP Calc BC (skip AB)
So these are my other classes (+ indicates a full weight class):
AP Biology+
AP Language and Composition+
AP Psychology+ (taking it online)
AP Capstone/Seminar+
Database+
US/VA History
Honors/Pre-AP Spanish 4 (0.5 weight aka A is a 4.5)
And I’m torn if I should do the “harder” class. I am projected a 95 as my final year grade in (Honors) Algebra 2/Trig, I got a 93 in Honors/Pre-AP Geometry and a 97 in Honors/Pre-AP Algebra 1.
I know Analyt is gonna be harder with homework and tests, but do you think I can manage?
You’ve gotten solid grades in math. You probably can do it. I’d recommend the harder course since you’ve done well in math.
What do you want to take senior year, AB or BC?
With 4 Ap’s already, you must be careful not to overload. On the other hand, you’re doing great in your math class so it would make sense to take the harder math - perhaps by dropping AP Psych?
Do the harder math, especially if you want to go into a STEM field in the future.
Thanks for all the replies. The reason I’m like scared is because the teacher is notorious for hard tests and an overall hard class. Her class is supposedly worse than calc…
Probably just AB, as the BC teacher at my school doesn’t teach enough to be successful in Calc 3 in college
It’s pretty normal actually - in math, unless you had an unusually demanding class, you’d likely start at the supposed level of your AP (and quickly realize that AP is very different from a “real” college class). So, if you had to take further math, after BC, you’d be in Calc 2, unless your class was exceptional. You’d take Calc 1 after AB UNLESS you wouldn’t need to take any more math and could just take the credit. Note that premeds should take Calc 1, AP doesn’t count.
I thought analysis was harder than Calc AB so that might just be the course itself. You’ve been managing math classes before and if you drop an AP you should be fine. Even if you don’t and get 1-2 B’s, I think the rigor of your classes will make up for it…
I disagree with @MYOS1634 for strong math students. If you learn enough in BC to get a 5 on the AP test then Calc 2 would be boring at most colleges.
