I know I'm taking math 20c and chem 6a for sure..
My question is should I take a HSS, say a relatively easier one as opposed to Muir 40, which I assume would be harder or at least from what I hear, take a lot of time.
I'm asking this because I also plan to take MAE9 as a bioengineering major and coming from little programing experience, I don't want to overburden myself first quarter and start off overwhelmed. =/

Any SD'ers, preferably muirons have any input on this?

Also bumping up my professor thread. d(^_^d)
for the above mentioned classes, any recommendations of professors?
hehe (don't link me to my own thread, haha)
something new? thanks

when i took muir40, there were 2 papers (+10% participation in class). i think now it's 3 shorter papers but the formula is about the same:

learn about claims and warrants
topic given
write about the topic, 1-2 pages due
revise in class, make it 3-4 pages.
revise to 5-6 pages up to whatever the page count is now...when i took it, it was 2 papers of 9-10 pages each.
turn it in
repeat for the other papers.

i'm a science major and decent at writing. i don't think muir40 was that bad....it took up as much time as any other 4-unit class. just hope you get a good TA, and when they tell you to write in a certain way...do it. don't get all creative. just stick to the formula that they provide you and go to office hours as often as you can.

muir 50 is another story. it sucked. a lot.

So you don't think it would be harder than any other HSS?
Did you take it first quarter of your freshmen year? (assuming you got in)
I heard from my counselour its best to get it over with it as soon as possible.
=/

no i don't think it's harder. but then again, the only other hss type classes i've taken are an english lit class and a music class. and obviously music doesn't require work :P but thinking back in retrospect, it wasn't that bad...just hope you don't get writer's block and be willing to put in effort. if you do a decent job on the papers, and you don't write like a fob, you can get a B.

yes i took it the first quarter. just get it over with.

muir50 has different topics you can choose from. make sure you choose the one you like. i got last choice in topics based on enrollment time and that was horrible. muir50 is essentially turning in 3 components: 10-source annotated bibliography, research proposal, and a 10-12 page research paper on the topic the class is based on. so you can see this is obviously more time-consuming than muir40 which just has you spout your opinions on a topic (and given one source, like an article...), versus muir50 is going through a million sources and analyzing them
